Diarrhea may be a side effect of medication or a symptom of indigestion, a bacterial or viral infection, or other gastrointestinal diseases. Aside from the unpleasant urge of need to go almost constantly, a more serious risk of diarrhea is the resulting dehydration, which is described as the excessive loss of water and electrolytes from the body. 1. Watch out for signs of dehydration. Severe thirst, a dry or sticky mouth, weakness, headache, dark yellow urine or very little urine output, and dry, cool skin may all indicate dehydration. 2. Drink up! The easiest and simplest way to stop dehydration in its tracks is to take in as much fluids as you can.

Drink 8 to 10 glasses of clear fluids a day is ideal. Good choices are water, clear broth and sports drinks. An even better choice would be electrolyte replacement solutions or oral rehydration salts (ORS), such as Pedialyte (great for both kids and adults) and Gastrolyte.

3. Take over-the-counter medications. Drugs like loperamide (Imodium) and bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) can temporarily help stop diarrhea and thus keep dehydration at bay. These medications may help if the issue is hyperactive digestion or a hypermotile gastrointestinal tract. However, if you have bloody diarrhea or symptoms worsen after 2 to 3 days, even after taking these medications, stop taking them immediately and see a doctor. This may mean that the underlying cause is a more serious condition that requires medical treatment. If the condition is bacterial, viral or parasitic in nature, diarrhea is the body’s way of getting rid of the microbes. Taking in anti-diarrheal drugs may make matters worse by trapping the offending organism in the intestines. Also, if the patient is a child or infant, such over-the-counter medications are not advisable.

4. Opt to receive IV fluids. If you cannot take anything by mouth and cannot keep fluids in for long, an alternative choice is to go to a health facility where you receive intravenous fluids. They contain the necessary mix of electrolytes and water and go straight into your bloodstream to immediately make up for fluid loss.

5. Eat the right food. Certain foods may help ease diarrhea and in the process, stop dehydration. The BRAT diet, referring to bananas, rice, applesauce and toast, can help replenish potassium and nutrient stores that diarrhea depletes. These foods can also lessen the watery consistency of stool. Boiled potatoes, crackers, cooked carrots, and other soft, bland foods can help as well. Avoid dairy products, excessive amounts of meat, and sweet, sugary treats as they may worsen the condition.

6. See a doctor. If diarrhea is a result of a microbial viral infection, simply taking over-the-counter medications for symptomatic treatment is not going to help much. Your doctor needs to do a check-up and run some lab tests to determine the cause. If it is due to a bacterial, viral or parasitic infection, you will be prescribed some antibiotics or antimicrobial drugs to help kill the culprit.
