How to Apply Eyeshadow

Eye makeup is perhaps one of the most difficult forms of makeup application to master. There is so much to use, including eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, and eyebrow pencil. Moreover, there are so many eyeshadow colors that it is hard to decide how to apply eyeshadow the right way. Apart from taking your eye color into consideration, you also have to take note of your eye shape. If you are a beginner in the application of eyeshadow, here are some guidelines that might help you:

  1. Clean your face first. This rule applies to any kind of makeup you put on your face.

  2. Prime your eyelids: Apply a base to your entire eyelid up to the brow bones. You can use an eyeshadow primer or even just liquid foundation or concealer. If you want your eyeshadow to stay intact for hours, this is a step that you should never ignore. When applying the primer, you can either use your clean fingers or a makeup sponge.

  3. Choose three colors to comprise your base, highlighter, and contour colors.

Remember that, when applying eyeshadow, you need to know how to blend colors. One good trick is to find complementary colors that have light, medium, and dark intensities. You should start with the lightest color as the base, then go darker as you apply the highlighter. It is helpful to start with a neutral color as the base, for instance, light brown or peach. Apply this on the lid only (meaning the area that is directly over your eyeball). You can also sweep the eyeshadow a little over the outside edge.

  4. Use bolder colors on the crease. Make sure you don’t extend upward towards the brows if you want to look natural. It is only fine to do that if you want a dramatic effect. When choosing colors, you also have to make sure that they go well with the color of your eyes. If you want to bring the color of your eyes out, you should choose an eyeshadow of the same color. However, if you want to make your eyes look bigger, a contrasting eyeshadow color will achieve the same effect.

  5. The darkest color should be drawn in a thin line at the inner corner of the eye. The line should get thicker on the outside of the eyelid. This should be applied on the crease of your eye. However, you should be careful to blend only on the outside edges of your eye.

  6. You can slightly soften the color of the darkest eyeshadow shade with a clean applicator tip. Smudge it slightly on the lashes.

  7. Remember that eyeshadow comes before all other eye makeup. That is why it is important not to have your mascara and eyeliner run over your eyeshadow. However, if this does happen, you can remedy it by wiping it off using a dry cotton swab. It will keep eyeshadow smudging to a minimum.

  8. You can also add shimmer to your eyes to enhance them. The only downside about shimmering eyeshadow is that it also highlights wrinkles and heavy lids. What you can do in such a case is use a nude color on the eyelids and apply the shimmer on the brow bone.

You should really invest in a good eyeshadow if you want to learn how to apply eyeshadow perfectly. High quality eyeshadow gives you a richer color palette and lasts longer than cheaper brands, making you look fabulous for a long period of time.
