How to Apply for Government Grants

How to Apply for Government Grants

If you have a worthwhile project that you think the government will be interested in, then you should consider applying for a federal grant. If approved, this will allow you to pursue your project using government funds. All you have to do is report your progress and finish it at an appointed time. In the United States, there are around 26 federal agencies that can award grants to people. If you think that you deserve a spot, learn how to apply for government grants:

  1. Visit the Grants.gov website. The Grants.gov site provides a list of available programs where you can apply for a grant. It also lists each administering agency, as well as the deadlines for submission of application. Make sure that you register before applying for any grant, even though you can surf the list of grants without actually signing up for the site. If you have a specific area of interest, you can make searching easier for you by specifying the federal agency that you are targeting as well as the category.

  2. Review the synopsis.

To get an idea of what a grant is all about, you should review the synopsis first. This will let you know if the opportunity is right for you.

  3. Register for the site. Once you have chosen a grant, complete the registration process in Grants.gov in order to be eligible to apply for the government grant. Registration usually takes three to five business days, but it can also take up to two weeks if requirements are not completed in a timely manner. You can register either as an organization or an individual.

  4. Download a grant application package. The application forms in the package come in PDF format and are designed to be accomplished offline. It also contains specific instructions, if there are any, directly from the administering federal agency. Make sure that you have Adobe Reader installed on your computer in order to access the grant application package. Also, remember to fill out all mandatory fields, which are highlighted in yellow and marked with an asterisk.

  5. Submit the grant application package. When you have completed all the required forms, submit the grant application package online. If there are any required attachments, make sure that you also send them with your application form. For documents completed offline, you may click the “Save & Submit” button to submit your application. Keep in mind that all the files that you submit should comprise less than 200 MB. If you have any videos, audio, or images attached, it is best to compress them and label them under different filenames. If your whole application exceeds 200 MB, you may contact the administering federal agency to ask if they can waive this limit requirement for you.

  6. Wait for the notifications. After submitting the grant application package online, you will be redirected to a confirmation screen containing your name and tracking number. Take note of the tracking number so that you can follow up on your application. You should also receive a notification from Grants.gov via email stating that they have received your application and have either validated or rejected it due to technical errors. These emails should arrive in your inbox within two business days. After that, you will get another email once Grants.gov has forwarded your application to the concerned government agency. Once the agency receives your application, it will then become responsible for corresponding with you in regard to your application.

  7. Follow up your application. To track your application, go to the Grants.gov site and click “Track My Application.” Enter your tracking number. Another option is to log in to your account and click “Check Application Status.” If the site does not respond to you within two business days of submitting your queries, you may contact them via toll-free hotline or email.

Most people are not aware of this, but the steps on how to apply for government grants are pretty easy. You should take advantage of them if you have any worthwhile projects. Who knows, you just might be able to get financial support from the government.
