How to Apply Fusion Hair Extensions

How to Apply Fusion Hair Extensions

The fusion method of attaching hair extensions has gained popularity over the years, as it looks very natural and even allows you to wash your hair and use styling products. However, learning how to apply fusion hair extensions entails considerable time, as it involves attaching small tufts of hair onto groups of strands. Once completed though, you get to enjoy fantastic hair for at least the next two to three months. Here are the basics of attaching fusion hair extensions to hair at least 5 inches long:

  1. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to removes dirt buildup and any residues that may prevent the glue from sticking to your locks. Don't use conditioner however, as this may make the adhesive less likely to stick properly to your hair.

  2. Let your hair air dry, or use a hair dryer with a diffuser to prevent heat damage. Make sure your locks are completely dry, as moisture reduces the glue’s effectiveness.

  3. Work in sections, starting from the bottom and moving up to the crown of the head.

It helps to wear rubber finger gloves on the index finger and thumb of your dominant hand to protect them from the heat and glue.

  4. Part the hair crosswise about two inches from the nape of the neck. Pin up the rest of your hair.

  5. Pick a thin clump of hair with a comb and twist it a little so it's easier to manage.

  6. Position the pre-tipped hair extension under the twisted strip of hair, making sure that the glued tip is about 5 millimeters from the roots of your natural hair.

  7. Use the connector tool or extension iron to heat the pre-tipped hair extension, and stick it to the twisted strand.

  8. Roll the fused portion in between your index finger and thumb so that it adheres well and looks more naturally fused.

  9. Repeat the same process with the other strands in the same row.

  10. If you're set on having cold fusion hair extensions, which does not use heat or glue, you'll still need to prepare and section your hair the same way. Instead of gluing the extensions, you will only thread a small strand of natural hair through a tube with a pulling needle.

  11. First, insert the pulling needle through a tube. Then, hook in the twisted length of natural hair with the needle, and let it slide through the tube, which should be positioned about an inch from the scalp.

  12. Insert the hair extension through the tube and, once secured, flatten the tube with pliers so that it clamps down on the natural and artificial hair at the same time, thereby fusing them together.

You should not shampoo or condition your hair during the 24 hours after the hot fusion process to ensure optimal bonding. As you perfect your skills on how to apply fusion hair extensions, remember that you may need readjustment every two to three months. Moreover, comb or brush your hair with care so you don't unnecessarily tug at or comb through the sections where the artificial and natural hair have been fused together.
