how to avoid wage garnishment

As you go through your everyday life with your family, you will notice things that you can't live without. These things are a part of life’s necessities, such as food, water, electricity and gas for cars. You will have to spend money on these expenses on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. More often than not, you will use your credit cards to pay for these. Using credit cards to pay for your expenses can be a great convenience; however, it can also damage your credit score history if you do not ensure regular and prompt payment of your bills. As you pay your monthly credit card debt, you should also be aware that if you do not pay your debts habitually and at the scheduled time, you may run into financial trouble. You have to learn ways on how to avoid wage garnishment for your own benefit and the benefit of your employer. Here are ways you can avoid wage garnishment:

  1. Pay your debts on time. The best way to avoid wage garnishment is to pay your bills, credit card debts, loans, mortgages and other payables on time and in the full amount due.

Do not pay less than the minimum due because late fees will accumulate onto the next month’s statement.

  2. Negotiate as early as possible. If there is a need for you to appeal and negotiate with the bank or the creditor, do so at an early stage. If you are not capable of paying for your debts in a certain period of time, go to your bank and ask for more time so you can pay your debts at a later date. Do not let time pass by and ignore your responsibility to pay. You should know and understand the nature of your bills, including the amount payable and when it is due.

  3. Prioritize payment of bills. Prepare a list of your debts, creditors, amounts payable, due dates and how much room you have to negotiate the due dates. In this way, you will know which debt to pay for at a certain time, such as your taxes. Most banks and creditors would rather adjust and restructure your payment plan than go through legal matters, such as filing a wage garnishment complaint against you.

  4. Be honest and keep your promises. When you meet with your creditors and banks, present to them your current financial situation. Do not miss out on a single opportunity to be given a new payment plan that will work for both parties. Show them that you are, indeed, in need of more time to completely settle all your debts. Make sure that you do not lose the trust of your debtors as this may reflect on your record and future bank and creditor transactions.

  5. Keep your bank or creditor updated. You will be able to save yourself from wage garnishment if you keep your creditor or the bank updated on your current financial conditions. They may be able to create a payment scheme that is suited for you while you still meet their stipulations.

You do not want to tarnish your reputation inside your work place and damage your financial capacity just because of your inability to settle your credit card debts. There are a lot of ways on how to avoid wage garnishment, but ultimately, all you have to do is keep up with the payment of all your debts.
