How To Become A Home Care Provider

If you are one of those kind-hearted individuals who finds job fulfillment in caring for other people, you can be a home care provider, regardless of your educational status. There are many kinds of home care providers. Some are licensed, others are not. However, there are support services offered by both state and home care employers to make sure that customers receive quality care as needed. Hereís how to become a home care provider, based on the qualifications you may already have.

  1. Apply to an authorized home care providing entity to qualify as a caregiver. Your capabilities will be assessed for certain responsibilities. You can do this with or without formal experience or education. You will undergo basic training for home skills, such as meal preparation, housekeeping, first aid and safety procedures.

  2. If you already have some home care skills and experience, you can volunteer to be certified by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice or NAHC. Bring proof of your expertise with you. This could be in the form of recommendation letters from previous employers. You will be given an NAHC examination after 75 hours of coursework. Once you have the certification, you can use it to get a more concrete home care job.

  3. Inquire about other home care training for aspiring home health aides, companions, homemakers and caregivers organized by the state. Allocating another 75 hours to get a specialization in your field is not a bad idea as extra insurance in terms of job security. It can keep you employed as long as youíre able to perform the duties of a home care provider.

  4. Start being a companion to a relative, friend or somebody recommended by someone you know in need of home care, for agreed compensation. You do not need a license for this. You can always progress by getting training from the NAHC if you intend to work in establishments endorsed, funded or supported by the state. It is better to get exposure to the nature of the job by working with people familiar to you. Once you are used to providing assistance for the daily personal needs of these people, it will be easier for you to perform similar duties for other recipients in the future.

  5. Take the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX, if you are already a graduate of a nursing school. You can be a licensed home care nurse or LPN, which stands for licensed practical nurse, if youíve achieved a passing score for the NCLEX-PN. Registered home care nurses will be doing the rounds, following doctorís orders, to administer treatment to sensitive patients. They will perform the tasks of registered nurses, or RNs, in the recipientís home rather than the hospital.

  6. Complete a masterís degree in physical therapy and you can get a license to join a home care team as an in-home physical therapist. Instead of maintaining a clinic, you can be on call when your services are needed. The care-giving agent that you are associated with will have the responsibility for marketing and managing the work force, leaving you to concentrate on performing the tasks of a physical therapist and nothing more. This is a good way to balance your personal and professional life.

How to become a home care provider? There are many ways if this is really what you want to do. This is not an easy job, but very rewarding indeed. If you have the compassion to care for the sick or the disabled, youíll be well suited to make it a serious career. There are many people who will need your services wherever you may be. You just need to find the right connections.
