  1. Though not necessary, a degree in Journalism or English will give you an advantage. You will learn all the basic elements that a writer should know, including theories behind different styles of writing.

  2. If you are eyeing the magazine business then always read a publication. There are different kinds of magazines -- educational, fashion, sports, health and many others. Read at least one a week to get to know the style and the topics that are usually being published.

  3. Practice good grammar and apply it to your writing.

    If you want to work for a major publication, you should aim for flawless grammar. Do not rely too heavily on a computer’s auto correct feature. It won’t always help you.

  4. Expand your vocabulary. You can start this while in school. Whenever you come across a new word, always reach for the dictionary. Research the meaning and use the word as often as you can until you have memorized it. Always read to widen your vocabulary. You can also make it a point to learn at least one word per day.

  5. Enhance your research skills. Read books that will guide you through effective research methods. You should also learn how to interview people. You can learn these techniques by enrolling in journalism classes. If you don’t have the money to enroll, at least learn the material on your own.

  6. Try writing articles that are appropriate for magazines. Explore different topics. Use sample articles as your guide if ever you are unsure of the format. Soon you will have your own style – if the magazine doesn’t demand that you follow one.

  7. Choose a particular kind of magazine that is right for you. Will you work well for an educational magazine or are you more of a fashion magazine writer? Whatever you choose, focus on your specialty. Get to know all that you can about these kinds of magazines. Your knowledge about the field is a plus. For example, if you want to write for a sports magazine, stay up-to-date on sports news.

  8. Once you have mastered the art of writing for a magazine and have chosen a particular path, apply for one. Make sure that you have samples of your work. When applying, know the name of the editor and address your application directly to him or her. Make sure that your sample articles are flawlessly written.

  9. If you are asked for an interview, bring a hard copy of your samples. Come at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Punctuality is essential. Be in your formal attire and demonstrate a passion for writing.
