There could be a number of reasons why you may want to learn how to breed Shih Tzu dogs. Whatever the reason, understand that they deserve care and proper rearing. By nature, Shih Tzus are calm, independent, and cheerful dogs. In terms of training, this breed of dogs must be appropriately handled to avoid issues. Also, breeding them with other dogs is not easy. But as long as you take note of the following breeding steps, you will never go wrong.

  1. Have your Shih Tzu checked by a vet. This is to ensure that your female dog is healthy before breeding. Often times, Shih Tzus have health issues like liver shunts, respiratory disorder, renal dysplasia, as well as eye and ear disorders. It is better to be assured that your dog does not have any type of genetically passed illness rather than deal with a more complicated problem later on.

  2. Pick a good dog to breed with. The vet should also examine the male dog to check for any genetically related health concerns as well as ordinary dog diseases like brucellosis and rabies.

When everything else relating to the dog’s health is okay, you can proceed. Furthermore, it is much better if the male dog is around the same size as your Shih Tzu.

  3. Closely observe when your Shi Tzu is in heat. Remember, Shi Tzus should not be used to breed until they are at least 2 years old. Naturally, your dog will go through periods of high fertility period twice a year. It is an advantage if you know the exact cycle period of your dog.

At any rate, your dog is ready to mate when she wiggles her tail and exposes herself to others. The cycle will run for about 21 days. On the 12th day, your female dog is very receptive to breeding. This can be the most appropriate time for mating.

  4. Keep both dogs together exclusively during the whole fertility period. Make sure both dogs are with each other all throughout the 21-day period or so. Allow them to go on sniffing, cuddling, and licking until the male mounts the female. While they are mating, watch over them so they do not hurt each other. Moreover, the female dog must not be in contact with any other male dogs during the whole cycle. This is because she is likely to discharge numerous eggs, and therefore, she should stay solely with the chosen male dog partner.

  5. Have your Shih Tzu checked again by the vet. Normally, your dog will gestate for 2 months more or less. Your vet will perform an ultrasound examination to find out the possible number of puppies she is carrying. The vet may also suggest a particular diet plan to ensure she is in good health throughout the pregnancy.

During the 9th week, you need to take and monitor her bodily temperature every day. In case you see drastic changes, consult the vet right away.

  6. Prepare a comfortable birthing area. This ensures that your Shih Tzu will give birth continuously. The best thing to do is to choose a private and quiet whelping area a few days before she is due. Use cotton blankets to keep the puppies warm when they come out. Check on the mother once in a while without causing any disturbances. Most importantly, do not hold the little puppies immediately. After giving birth, the puppies must be kept warm and let your dog get acquainted with her babies.

Shih Tzus are small dogs, growing maybe around 8 to 11 inches tall. They are light, usually weighing around 10 to 15 lbs. and can be great pets. If you want more of your own, the steps above tell you how to breed Shih Tzu dogs. Enjoy breeding!
