How to Care for a Chihuahua

How to Care for a Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a popular dog breed. It has a distinctive miniature size and a long life span. The Chihuahua is adorable and faithful to its master when properly trained. Therefore, consider the following tips on how to care for a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas deserve the best care possible.

  1. Choose a good breed of Chihuahua. If you plan to purchase a young Chi pup, then only buy one of a registered pedigree. There are many Chihuahua breeds that are not of good pedigree. You may consider the medical records and blood lines of a young Chi puppy’s parents - these are important to know before you can decide whether to buy it. Eye problems are Chihuahuas’ common medical deficiency. Make sure that the Chihuahua you bring home does not have this problem or other underlying health problems.

  2. Make it a point to complete your Chihuahua’s vaccination. Take your Chi pup to your vet for a checkup and for some vaccination advice. Keep its medical records and don’t fail to bring them to the vet for the dog’s annual physical checkup.

ommitted to giving this vital care to your dog because Chihuahuas can live to an age of up to 18 years when properly cared for.

  3. Provide the correct diet to your pet. Overfeeding is bad for dogs especially for Chihuahuas: They have small tummies since they are small dogs. They should not gain too much weight, as this is among their common health problems. Provide your Chihuahua with nutritious food three times daily in small portions. Use a high-quality dog food that will meet its daily food requirements. You may consult a vet regarding this. Avoid fatty, oily and salty foods, as well as human foods. Any of these can cause diarrhea, itchiness and vomiting, which can be fatal to your dog.

  4. Make good grooming a habit. Grooming Chihuahuas is a bit easy. They need to take a bath only once a month. You should use shampoo and conditioner for dogs. A long-haired Chihuahua needs to be freed from matting. Use a slicker comb and gently comb its hair, including its armpit hair. As for a short-haired Chihuahua, you can wipe its whole body with a wet towel at least once a week. Use another clean cloth to clean its ears, eyes, nose and anus. Brush its hair once a week using a specialized comb for dogs.

  5. Take your Chihuahua out for daily exercise. The Chihuahua is naturally active, and daily walks or exercise will be a good outlet for its energy. Play and bond with it, but be consistent in establishing good discipline when it shows bad behavior. Don’t forget to bring its favorite treat when it’s obedient to you. The treat will surely motivate it to continue the good behavior.

  6. Wrap a harness around its body when you take it out to the park. A harness is much better than a leash for a small dog like the Chihuahua. Make sure that it is always under your supervision. The Chihuahua is a tiny dog that anyone can step on accidentally, so be watchful.

  7. Prepare cozy clothes and sweaters during the winter so that your dog can wear them. The Chihuahua is very sensitive to extreme cold weather. It can freeze easily when it’s ice-cold. It may not be advisable to keep a Chihuahua in places with extreme, cold-weather conditions.

The Chihuahua is a small dog, but, eventually, it will show you its big heart if you nourish it with your love and support. Now that you know how to care for a Chihuahua, you can be a successful pet owner.
