How to Care for a Chihuahua Puppy

Small but terrible is an apt description of a Chihuahua puppy. Although it is one of the smallest dog breeds, it has qualities and traits comparable to puppy with a bigger body build. It can watch over your place like it was its own and it loves to cuddle up with you and follow you wherever you go. It is always a cheerful day when you are around your Chihuahua puppy. How to care for a Chihuahua puppy should not be hard for you as it does not require a round-the-clock care. However, you need to devote time and affection to your cute little puppy as it will surely crave for, need and enjoy all the attention you can give it. Here are a couple of ways you can show your love and care for you Chihuahua puppy:

  1. Your number one concern is health care. A Chihuahua puppy can have a life span of more than 15 years; however, it will develop heart ailments and other diseases when it is not given proper care as the years progress. Be careful that the puppy does not get into anything that will bring harm to it while watching that it does not develop weak joints, hypoglycemia, collapsed trachea or hydrocephalus.

The number of times a day you need to feed your Chihuahua puppy depends upon its age. For a puppy that is two to three months old, the recommended number of feeding times is four times a day. You can lower it to three times a day as it reaches three to six months. Finally, a twice-per-day-meal will be sufficient for the puppy that is between six to 12 months old.

  2. Provide your puppy with the basic and essential canine needs. While larger breed dogs need more exercise time, a Chihuahua puppy requires much less. An everyday walk around the neighborhood is sufficient to keep it strong and energetic. You also need to provide your puppy with a good and warm place to stay, appropriate puppy toys to play with to keep them from boredom, and most importantly, a bowl of nutritious and healthy food for each meal.

  3.  Grooming time is also a must. A Chihuahua puppy possesses a small body and a very thin coat. This is the main reason why it cannot bear very warm or cold weather. As much as it is important for you to be protected from the cold, your puppy needs the same kind of protection.  Purchase a little coat for the puppy during winter days.

Brushing the coat of your puppy, especially if it is from the long haired breed will improve your puppy’s coat and also serve as a bonding time you can share with your pet.

  4. Potty training is a must. You do not want your home to smell of puppy elimination. That is why caring for your dog must include potty training. It is important that the puppy knows the proper place to eliminate, whether inside or outside of the home. Be patient when potty training because this task can really be a challenge. However, once the puppy gets the hang of it and understands what you are trying to instruct it to do, it will become a breeze for both of you.

A Chihuahua puppy can be a very good companion and all-around-bodyguard, however, it is expected that as owners, you have full responsibility to learn how to care for a Chihuahua puppy to ensure it of a healthy living environment.
