How to Care for a Louis Vuitton Handbag

How to Care for a Louis Vuitton Handbag

Louis Vuitton (LV) handbags are worth a fortune. Even a small stain on its leather canvas can ruin your day. Unlike with many other handbags, simple soap and water will not do the trick for LV bags. It is an investment that you need to take care of, so here are some tips on how to care for a Louis Vuitton handbag:

  1. Carry the bag on your arms. This is especially important if your LV bag is made of vachetta leather. Holding the leather straps in your hands transfers microscopic dirt and oils onto the leather.

  2. Condition the leather straps. You need to do this to prevent cracking from constant use. Use a conditioner made specifically for delicate untreated leather. Avoid using other conditioners, as these may darken the leather, thereby doing more harm than good.

  3. Use a clean cloth for cleaning. The coated canvas of the bag's exterior is somewhat water resistant but not totally waterproof. If you want to clean it, use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the leather.

Never use soap and water or any cleaning solvents, as these may damage your bag. However, you can use baby wipes to evenly clean the leather, but be warned, as they may slightly darken the bag’s color.

  4. Store when not in use. Keep your Louis Vuitton handbag in the felt pouch that came with the bag when you are not using it. Store the pouch in a well-ventilated area, away from heat and humidity. Therefore, never put your bag in your car trunk or inside an enclosed car, as the heat can damage the leather.

  5. Keep the bag away from abrasive surfaces. Avoid any contact with abrasive surfaces, even something like rough countertops and jeans, as they can damage and scratch the delicate leather.

  6. Avoid heat, sun exposure, and moisture. The heat of the sun can fade and dry out the delicate leather. Likewise, protect your handbag from moisture, as it can damage the leather trim. Do not let the bag come in contact with lotions, hand sanitizers, and cosmetics, since they contain chemicals that might accumulate on the canvas and damage the leather trim.

  7. Use the Magic Eraser to remove stains. With the bumpy side, clean your bag. Rub it on the leather in circular motions to remove marks and stains. Be patient, as it can take a while. However, this should be a last resort since it is rather abrasive on the leather.

  8. Do not bring it to a dry cleaner. While some bags have emerged triumphant after getting dry-cleaned, some also get damaged. Instead, send your bag to a professional restoration service if you cannot get the marks and stains out.

The traditional cleaning methods for most handbags do not apply to caring for a Louis Vuitton bag, so knowing how to care for a Louis Vuitton bag means you can keep looking your lovely designer bag looking its best.
