How to Care for Aging Skin

As we age, it is important to pay attention to our skin. As we add years to our life, we do not need to add aging skin. As a preventive measure, it is best to start earlier to delay signs of aging. A natural approach is better than resorting to expensive, painful and possibly harmful treatments and procedures. There is no cause to panic if signs start to appear since there are several ways to remedy them. Here are some pointers on how to care for aging skin:

  1. Put on sunscreen every day. Especially, if you have to go outdoors. The sun’s rays are harmful to our skin. Choose products with a high SPF level. You can also wear a wide brimmed hat to protect the skin on your face and long sleeves for your arms. UV rays are no joke; severe cases can cause skin cancer. Milder cases damage our skin, giving us sunburn and hastening wrinkle formation.

  2. Make it a habit to clean and moisturize your face before going to bed. Remove your make-up to clear your pores and allow them to breathe. Be mindful of the ingredients on the moisturizer that you use.

    It should be free from irritating ingredients such as lemongrass, lime, lemon, mint and the like. This is very important especially when experiencing either extreme cold or dry weather. They make the skin dry making the skin prone to wrinkle formation and existing wrinkles will worsen.

  3. Apply a face cream nightly to lessen the appearance of age spots. As we sleep, our skin repairs and rejuvenates damaged cells. The ingredients of these creams help in the process. Use an alpha hydroxyl cleanser along with it to help fade age spots.

  4. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Dehydration makes your skin dry and prone to wrinkles. You can also supplement with some fresh fruit juices that are rich in vitamin C, A, B and E. These are also good for your skin.

  5. Make your daily food intake 40% vegetables, nuts, natural grain cereals as they can help to improve your skin. Avoid overeating foods rich in sugar, sodium and fats. Avoid coffee as much as possible substituting it with green tea which, because of its anti-oxidants, is better for your skin. Avoid smoking and environmental pollution. They can clog your pores which can lead to acne or blackheads.

  6. Avoid a stressful lifestyle. Get enough rest and sleep as much as possible. Staying up late often can make you look older. Your skin will sag and dry - making it looking unhealthy. Exercise regularly and be positive. As we age, we need to unwind more since our body tolerates stress less.

How to care for aging skin requires adjustment in your diet, sleeping habits, and lifestyle. It may sound hard to achieve but it is important not only for maintaining youthful skin but also for your total wellbeing. Appearance is not everything but it is a good therapy for making you feel good. No need to go under the knife to achieve this. When you get used to the adjustments, it will just become a habit and you will reap all the benefits that go along with it.
