How to Care for Micro Braids

How to Care for Micro Braids

The difference between micro braids and normal braids lies in their relative sizes. Micro braids are more tedious to do and require more care than natural braids. If not treated properly, micro braids can easily damage your hair and scalp. For this reason, time and patience should be invested in caring for micro braids. Learn about how to care for micro braids below:

  1. See to it that your hair is healthy and in good condition before you attempt to micro braid it. If you got your hair permed recently, allow two weeks to pass before you have micro braids done on it. Moisturize prior to styling and make sure you have the patience and resources to care for it. Once you’ve done all the hard work, be ready to embrace the positive effects. You will be rewarded with admiring looks and the feeling that you stand out from the crowd.

  2. Micro braids must be moisturized every day or every other day, depending on your needs. An oil-based, hair-moisturizing spray is highly recommended. Spray oil sheen on your micros daily to make them look fresh and silky.

  3. Wash your hair once a week as braids easily attract bacteria and lint. Washing can also help ease the tightness of the braids. Moisturize for longer than you would for unbraided hair and only use mild moisturizing products. A hair specialist at the salon or the hair supply store should be able to give you the appropriate recommendations.

  4. Tie the braids in a ponytail and wrap a scarf around them at night to prevent them from becoming frizzy. This will also minimize split ends by preventing the hair tips from rubbing against the edges of the pillow at night. This may seem like a big sacrifice on your part, but once you get used to it, you will think nothing of it. Your beautiful micro braids will be worth all the effort.

  5. Ask your stylist to make your micro braids just right. Making them very tight will cause discomfort and injury. Commit to performing all the tasks that come with micro braids before you get them done. Without the proper care, you will suffer. If you are not up for it, you are better off with a ponytail, a bun, or another simple hairstyle.

  6. Do not forget to care for your natural hair. The new hair growth needs to be moisturized. Use coconut oil or olive oil-based moisturizers. Wear your micro braids for 4 full months and then gently undo them. Wash and comb thoroughly using a wide-toothed comb. Let your hair breathe and your scalp relax. Consider having a trim to get rid of dry hair tips and to remove possible split ends.

Micro braids are versatile and long-lasting. They definitely look attractive and exotic, but note that not every hair type can be styled like this. The 5 to 7 hours you spend getting the micro braids will reward you with up to 4 months of an enjoyable hairstyle. You should learn how to care for micro braids to get the most out of them.
