How to Care for Naturally Kinky Hair

Kinky hair should be seen as a unique asset—not everyone has it. At the same time, not everyone seems to appreciate the good points of this kind of hair, considering the fact that it needs special TLC compared to other hair types. However, if you know how to care for naturally kinky hair, you'll find that having naturally curly tresses can actually be good, as it makes you stand out in the crowd. Plus, it highlights your special genetic heritage and helps you express to the world that you are proud of who you are. Below are the basics in caring for your curlicious hair:

  1. Caring for your kinky locks also involves what's beneath the surface. It's wise to nourish it from the inside out by taking in a lot of water—at least eight glasses a day—and ensuring you have a nutritious, balanced diet. Eat foods rich in protein; this helps strengthen your hair and gives your body more to work with when growing your strands. Get enough sleep and manage stress well so that you prevent stress-induced shedding and breakage.

  2. lthough you should not wash your hair too frequently, this does not mean you should rarely do so at all.

ur mane needs to be cleaned of grime and product buildup, aside from the fact that it also needs the hydrating properties of good old water. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should shampoo every time you do so. Instead, go for “cowashing” or using conditioner to wash your hair. Aim to shampoo with a mild, sulphate-free formulation about once a month or every six weeks to prevent dryness, which is mostly caused by the sulphates (ammonium laurel sulphate or sodium laurel/laureth sulphate) in the product.

  3. Before you wash your hair, you should detangle it so you don't worsen the knots when they're wet and tightly matted due to the water, which makes the tangled strands swell up and tighten their grip. There also may be more breakage or shedding when you try to wash without detangling first.

  4. To detangle, mix some olive oil or coconut oil with water and spray this on sectioned locks. Follow this application up with conditioner, spreading it generously on your tresses from roots to tips and massaging it in as you go. Run your fingers through the sectioned hair and carefully detangle any knot you encounter. Do this for all other sections. Once you're done detangling, run a wide-toothed comb through your strands. Proceed to wash the conditioner thoroughly off your hair.

  5. Combing your hair while it's still wet and coated with conditioner is highly recommended—and this should be the only time you actually comb it. Never do this while your hair is dry as this may cause breakage. To minimize muss ups, cover your hair in a satin cap before going to bed and pat your hair dry with a cotton (not terry cloth) towel or shirt after showering or washing.

  6. Do know that oil is not very hydrating to your hair, especially those that are synthetic. Mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and parafinum liquidum all seal off your hair from moisture, although these can add shine to your strands. Also, these ingredients or products can attract dust and dirt, making your locks feel grimy. If you must moisturize, opt for leave-in conditioners instead. You can also use natural oils, like olive oil or coconut oil, although you should also avoid applying too much.

  7. Prefer to air dry your hair instead of blow drying or straightening it with a hair iron. This is because both options are damaging to your hair. If you must use appliances to style or dry your hair, apply a heat protectant to your locks first to minimize the impact of direct heat.

Knowing how to care for naturally kinky hair can actually make your grooming ritual easier and leave you with stronger, healthier locks that you can proudly show off day after day.
