How to Clean your Face Properly

Most of us assume that cleaning one’s face is an automatic task. You simply have to wet your face, apply some facial soap or solution, then rinse your face and dry it with a towel. However, what you don’t know is that there might be some subtle things that you are missing, which is the reason your face remains dry, oily, or prone to acne breakouts. It all starts with knowing how to clean your face properly. If you want to learn how you can clean your face thoroughly, follow these steps:

  1. Pull your hair back first so that it does not get in the way. You can do this by tying your hair with an elastic band or wearing a headband if you are washing your face in the sink. If you are in the shower or tub, you may use a shower cap instead.

  2. Wash your hands with soap and water before you wash your face, since your hands have probably accumulated much dirt and grime prior to washing your face. Of course, you would not want to touch your face with dirty hands.

  3. Remove any makeup before you start cleansing your face.

here are many makeup removers available on the market.

  4. Wet your face with warm water. This will help open up your pores, allowing you to clean deeper into your skin. Cold water will only close your pores, making your face-cleaning regimen less effective. If it is possible, you might want to steam your face in the bath or shower for a few minutes before washing it. Remember to check the water temperature first before splashing it into your face, since hot water will not only be painful, but may also cause some capillaries in your face to burst, leaving small red marks on your nose and cheeks.

  5. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of facial cleanser or solution on your fingertips and rub them together. Use your fingertips to apply the cleanser on your face in a gentle and circular motion. Do not scrub too hard as this might only make your acne worse and even cause the development of scars. Massage your face with the cleanser for 30 seconds to one minute.

  6. Rinse the soap by splashing your face repeatedly with cold water and rubbing gently with each splash. The cold water will close your pores. Remember to pay special attention to the jawline, hairline, and neck, as these spots are easy to miss while rinsing. Make sure that you thoroughly remove all soap residues on your face, since this can clog your pores and dry your skin, leading to more skin problems.

  7. Pat your face dry with a soft, clean towel. Do not rub the towel on your face, as this will only irritate your skin and encourage the development of wrinkles.

  8. After washing your face, apply an alcohol-free toner using a cotton ball. Gently massage it on your face in a circular motion.

  9. You may also apply a moisturizer to your face in order to enhance your face’s glowing look. If you are prone to acne, use a non-oily moisturizer. If you are going out, choose a moisturizer that contains SPF 15 or 30 sunscreen.

Knowing how to clean your face properly enables you to have a more effective way of cleaning your skin and stopping the occurrence of acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Remember to do this routine at least twice a day—in the morning when taking a bath and at night before going to sleep. Avoid over-washing your face, as it will only deprive your skin of moisture and cause irritation. Following these steps will help to keep your skin glowing and youthful.
