How to Clip Birds Wings

How to Clip Birds Wings

A tame bird knows its keeper and is very dependent on him or her. Clipping its wings is another way of controlling your pet’s movements. It is easier to protect it from harm when it cannot escape from you.  How to clip birds’ wings is essential in your intention to tame your pet. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Know and understand the different types of bird feathers to make sure you are on the right tract.  There are three different layers of feathers. Primary feathers begin from the top to the middle edging of the wing. These are the ones that need to be cut. They don’t hold veins; therefore, they are not dangerous to cut - but make sure that you clip only mature or fully grown primary feathers. A mature feather is whitish in color and hard. The function of primary feathers is to lessen the air pressure during flight. It helps them to fly smoothly.

  2. Prepare tools such as sharp scissors and towel. You may also need a corn flour. You can use this to stop the bleeding in case you accidentally cut the blood vein.

he towel to cover the bird’s body, including its head. This will prevent it from biting you. A clipping activity is also traumatic for the bird. It helps when you cover the bird’s head.  You may ask for another person’s assistance if you think you can’t control its struggles. Even a disciplined bird will surely scream and fight during the process.

  3. Wrap and hold the bird with a towel then put it in a position wherein you can easily cut its feathers. Gently stretch the wing and locate the primary feathers. Cut the top edge of the primary feather going down to the middle edge of the wing. Just be careful cutting until you reach the middle edge. Watch out for blood veins when going nearer to the secondary feathers. After clipping the first wing, do the same procedure to the other wing. Make sure to cut the same angle in both wings to give the bird good balance.

  4. Be careful with the secondary feathers. These feathers contain blood veins. Avoid cutting these feathers – it will cause bleeding and is fatal to the bird. Secondary feathers are responsible in shifting the movement up and down to maintain a smooth flight.  On the other hand, tertiary or “convert feathers” assure the strength of the bird’s wing to go through strong wind pressures easily when flying. These feathers should not be cut as well.

  5. Don’t worry – you won’t hurt the bird if you cut the right parts of the wings. It is just one way for humans to let their pet birds adapt quickly to the household setting.  Once you complete a successful clipping, you can easily train the bird. Discipline it using commands and teach the bird some skills for worthwhile family activities.  When these routines are implemented – taking care of your pet will be more manageable.

  6. Consult a veterinarian if you need more information. You can even let the expert perform the task of clipping your bird’s wings if you do not want to do it yourself.

How to clip bird wings is a know-how that bird owners should be familiar with. A tamed and happy bird is reward enough for its master. Devoting more time in acquiring knowledge on caring for your selected animal will make you successful in keeping it as your pet.
