How to Control Body Odor

Body odor can be a very embarrassing problem that may lead a person to have issues in regard to self-esteem. It can occur in different areas of the body, such as the armpits, feet, groin, genitals, and anus. Most people think that excessive sweating in these areas is the cause; however, sweating is a normal physiological process that is the body’s way of getting rid of waste products. Body odor is actually a result of bacteria accumulating on the skin and releasing chemicals that cause an unpleasant smell. If you are suffering from this condition and want to get rid of it, here are some tips on how to control body odor:

  1. Bathe every day. One of the most important ways to control body odor is to always take a bath or shower, not just once but even twice a day, if necessary. Use anti-bacterial soap or shower gel to thoroughly cleanse and scrub your body clean of dirt and grime. You should also pay special attention to the nooks and crannies of your body, such as the backs of your knees and behind your ears, as well as your groin, feet, and underarms.

Remember to pat yourself dry with a clean towel after bathing to ensure that there are no moist areas left, since bacteria thrive on moist skin. You may also apply powder to areas that tend to sweat more, since powder can absorb moisture and keep you dry for a longer period of time. In addition to bathing every day, you also have to make sure that you wear clean clothes every day.

  2. Use deodorant or antiperspirant. Use a strong deodorant or antiperspirant on your underarms to control body odor. Keep in mind that deodorants only cover up the smell of bacteria on your skin and do not really prevent sweating. If you want to control sweating, you should use an antiperspirant, which contains a chemical known as aluminum chloride that reduces sweating. Most antiperspirants also contain deodorants, so you can just purchase something like that. Apply it on your underarms twice a day, in the morning and at nighttime.

  3. Watch what you eat. What you eat can actually affect the way your body smells. For instance, there are certain foods that make you sweat more and put you more at risk for developing body odor, such as spicy foods. Spices like onions and garlic also exhibit a certain aroma that might be carried over to your sweat, making your body odor stronger and more pungent. Fast food and other processed food can also contribute to body odor since they contain lots of chemicals.

  4. Store your clothes properly. Sometimes, your body odor comes from the clothes that you wear. Aside from changing your garments daily, you should also make it a point to store your clothes in a well-ventilated place so that they will smell nice. Consider putting scented paper in your drawers and cabinets so that the scent will also stick to your clothes. It is also better to hang your clothes instead of folding them in drawers, since the former can help dry your clothes and kill any bacteria that might be present.

  5. Consult your doctor. If body odor has already become a persistent problem, then you might have a medical condition that causes you to smell in an unpleasant way. This might be due to your hormone levels, as well as other disease conditions like diabetes or inflammation. Your doctor will also be able to provide you with a solution to your problem of body odor.

Instead of wallowing in embarrassment, you can learn how to control body odor since it is something that can be overcome. Doing so will help boost your confidence and self-esteem.
