How to Control High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is known to be the number one cause of heart disease. Although cholesterol has its own role in our body’s normal functions, having too much of it in your body can be a very dangerous risk factor to your health. Knowing and practicing how to control high cholesterol is very important to avoid further complications.

Having a high cholesterol level can make you a candidate for many kinds of heart disease like atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. This is primarily because of the fat deposits that are left behind in your arteries because of the continuous accumulation of cholesterol. These fat deposits will then harden in time and eventually block blood flow. This is when the problem begins.

The good thing about this is that reducing the amount of cholesterol in your body is very attainable. You just have to set goals for yourself and have a lot of discipline. Here are some tips and ways to help you get started:

  1. I hate to say the four-letter word that everybody hates, but it is still the best way. Yes, diet will definitely help you control your cholesterol. When you say “diet,” it doesn’t mean you will starve yourself to death. It just means that you have to cut down on the foods that have very high levels of cholesterol. Some of the foods that you have to watch out for are fatty foods like butter, cream, red meats, eggs, and many others. It is not critical to totally eradicate them from your daily meals because you still need a substantial amount of cholesterol to keep your body functioning. Maintaining balanced meals is the key to success.

  2. Exercise your way to a healthy body. Now, this doesn’t mean slaving all day in the gym. This just means that you have to quit being sedentary and go get moving. Try to walk at least 30 minutes every morning to jump start your day. If you can, you can do a little more cardio and try to jog. There are also a couple of simple exercises that you can do even for just 15 minutes. The important thing is to always move. Let your body burn those fats and use all the excess cholesterol that you have in your body.

  3. Always include fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Remember that these healthy foods contain a lot of fiber that acts as cellulose to help sweep away any unwanted substances in your body. They are essential in your body especially when you want to trim down your cholesterol.

  4. Choose the lesser of two evils. Monounsaturated fats are the type of fats that can actually help lower the triglycerides which makes them a much healthier choice. Avocado, olive oil, canola oil, and peanut butter are just some of the choices.  Always remember to consume these in moderation.  Too much of anything is never good.

  5. You can never go wrong with oats. It has been scientifically proven that oats can get rid of most of the unwanted cholesterol.  Today, they are accompanied by good omega-3 substances that can really help you lower the risk of any heart problems. A cup of oatmeal a day is all it takes.

Taking care of yourself and your body is nobody’s task but yours. Nobody can do it for you. The good thing about these things is that you will actually benefit from doing them. Knowing how to control high cholesterol is just one thing, but it can really help you in the long run. Nobody wants to have an unhealthy life, right? Just be very positive and learn to always love your body.
