Chili beans are certainly one of the most admired foods in Latin America. That is why many people are inspired to learn how to cook chili beans at home. This dish is becoming very popular in other parts of the world because the required ingredients are relatively cheap. Besides, chili beans may be consumed by themselves or served as a side dish. Let us try a hearty, filling and flavorful chili beans recipe. The steps below will only take about an hour to complete. If you use dry and older beans, it can take time to make the beans tender. The best option is to soak the beans overnight or several hours before cooking.

  1. You will need the following ingredients: two cups of pinto beans (either canned or uncooked), one lb of ground turkey or ground round beef, two cups of white rice (uncooked), two cloves of chopped garlic, two tablespoons of olive oil, one and half tablespoons of chili powder, one tablespoon of chopped parsley, one teaspoon of sugar, one piece of 14 oz canned tomato, one chopped yellow onion, one tablespoon of butter, one jalapeno sliced pepper, half a cup of cilantro leaves (fresh) and one to two teaspoons of salt to taste.



  2. Boil the pinto beans. If soaked overnight, wash the beans first. Pour the beans into a large-sized pot, and add around three to four quarts of water. Allow the pot to boil over a medium-high heat. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 30 to 45 minutes until the texture of the beans becomes tender. If you use canned beans, just rinse them without bringing the beans to a boil.

  3. Cook the white rice. While waiting for the pinto beans to become tender, cook the white rice in the meantime. Just follow the instructions printed on the rice container. While cooking, enhance the flavor of the rice by adding butter.

  4. Sauté the garlic and onions. Use a small-sized skillet in sautéing the garlic and cloves of onion with the olive oil over a medium heat. Fry until the mixture turns translucent.

  5. Cook the ground meat. Use another small-sized skillet to cook either ground turkey or beef over a medium-high heat. While cooking, add one tablespoon of chili powder, and then gradually add more to taste. Stir thoroughly before adding the sautéed garlic and onions. Add the following ingredients one by one: chopped parsley, 14 ounces of canned tomatoes, one teaspoon of sugar and one teaspoon of salt. The purpose of adding sugar is mainly to counteract the acidity level of the added tomatoes.

  6. Drain the beans. Once the beans are already tender, drain them thoroughly. Mix the beans into the meat and ingredients. Add another teaspoon of salt if needed.

  7. Simmer the beans. After mixing the ingredients altogether, simmer further for eight to 10 minutes. As you cook, taste the dish to know if you need to add more salt.

  8. Serve while hot. This will make four servings. Serve the dish along with tasty corn tortillas or over cups of white rice. By the way, before serving, sprinkle cilantro leaves all over the chili beans.

There is a variety of ways on how to cook chili beans perfectly. While some wellness enthusiasts prefer adding tomatoes and vegetables, others experiment by combining fresh chilies, cumin, cilantro, tomatoes, beans and other spices. Sometimes, they find it more appealing to serve chili beans over a cornbread or burritos.
