How to Cook Lobster Tails in the Oven

If you know how to cook lobster tails in the oven, you can cook your fair share of lobster meat without spending a fortune. In many restaurants, lobster tails are delicacies that are available at a high cost. Consider preparing them at home for a wonderful but affordable dinner. Just follow the tips below:

  1. Shop for lobster tails in the market or in grocery stores. Lobster tails can be bought frozen, but you can also find fresh ones in the wet section of any supermarket. You don’t need to buy whole lobsters. Just pick lobster tails. These will be cheaper on the whole, and they will offer enough meat to satisfy everyone. One lobster tail is good enough for one person if it weighs about 256 grams or 6-8 ounces. You can choose tails to meet your preferences in size and quantity.

  2. Thaw the frozen lobster tails before cooking: Remove the lobster tails from the freezer and place them in the refrigerator overnight. It will take about 10 hours to get them totally defrosted. Otherwise, for faster defrosting, fill a suitable bowl with water and submerge the tails in it without removing them from their packaging.

    Others prefer to microwave the lobster tails for 5 minutes at the defrost setting before cooking them. Choose the method you find most convenient. Just don’t cook frozen lobsters. That will prevent the meat from becoming rubbery and tough.

  3. Prepare the lobster tails for cooking after completely thawing them. Place each one on a wooden cutting board face down. Gently insert a thin, sharp knife between the meat and the hard, top shell to slightly separate the meat from it, but do not remove the shell yet. This will allow you to easily remove the meat from the shell when eating.

  4. Using kitchen scissors, begin cutting the lobster’s tail covering behind the hard shell. Cut along the hard edges on both sides until you get to the base of the tail. Peel off the covering gently. Lay the cut tail aside and repeat the task for the rest of the lobster tails.

  5. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. Season the lobster tail with melted butter, lemon juice, a pinch of paprika, and salt. You may add white, freshly ground pepper and powdered garlic to enhance the taste. If mixing the seasonings first, drizzle about 2 tablespoons of the mixture directly onto the lobster meat.

  7. Cut suitably-sized pieces of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Wrap each lobster tail in one to prevent it from drying up during baking. Seal the foil on both ends to prevent the juices from leaking out. You can also place the lobster tails in the oven without wrapping them in aluminum foil if you desire. However, the meat will likely lose its natural juices while cooking.

  8. Place the wrapped tails in the pre-heated oven. Cook for 25 minutes. Take note that baking time may vary depending on the sizes of the tails. Smaller tails will cook faster than medium-sized to large ones. Be cautious when baking to avoid burning the lobster tails.

  9. Heat up two strips of butter for your dipping sauce. Once you are done baking, remove the foil wrappings and serve the succulent, baked lobster tails.
