Long grain rice is rice that is about two-thirds as long as it is wide. This type of rice is also known as Basmati rice. Although it was first cultivated in India, presently, it is most popular in Asia, where the people enjoy the rice’s flavorful taste. The steps on how to cook long grain rice are fairly simple to follow. According to many cooks, there are numerous advantages to long grain rice. The longer the grain of the rice, the fluffier it becomes once cooked properly. It also tends to be less sticky. Because long grain rice contains low gluten, it is also easier to deal with. In addition, some people claim that Basmati rice has more flavor than other kinds of rice. It has a subtle, nutty flavor that is unique when it comes to rice. Cooking rice doesn’t have to be complicated. If you have a rice cooker, it would provide the ideal approach to cooking. However, if you don’t have one, here are the steps on how to cook your long grain rice:

  1. First, prepare the items that you need. You will need a heavy based pot or any container that is non-stick.

asure the amount of rice that you will cook. Remember that a cup of rice can serve two people. Also, prepare cold water.

  2. Next, rinse the rice to remove loose starch that could make it stickier. Sometimes, you may want to rinse the rice multiple times to ensure that the loose starch dissolves fully.

  3. This next step is optional. Some cooks prefer to soak their rice, especially if they are using older rice. This process will prevent the rice from becoming brittle. It is also said that soaking the long grain rice helps it to expand to its maximum length. Afterwards, make sure that you drain your rice thoroughly.

  4. Measure the necessary amount of water by using your fingers. First, put the rice into the pot that you will use for cooking. Add in a substantial amount of water. Submerge your middle finger through the water and rice until you touch the bottom of the pot. Measure the height of the rice. Use your thumb to mark the measurement. Submerge your middle finger again, but this time your finger should just touch the surface of the rice. Now, the measurement of the rice should match the measurement of the water. Adjust accordingly. If you find the rice is too hard, just add more water.

  5. Cover the pot with a well-fitted cover. Set the fire to high and wait for the water to boil. After boiling, lower the temperature to its lowest setting. This may take 10 to 12 minutes to cook. Constantly check after 10 minutes. Once the water is absorbed and the rice is fluffy, the rice is done. Taste it to make sure.

  6. Let the rice sit for about 10 to 20 minutes for the moisture to redistribute. This way, the texture becomes softer.

Today, there are many different ways on how to cook long grain rice. However, this is a popular way to cook any kind of rice.
