How to Cook Steak in the Oven

How to Cook Steak in the Oven

Once you have mastered how to cook steak in the oven, your steaks will be sought after by all your family and friends. While there are various ways to prepare steak, cooking it in the oven yields a different outcome when compared to pan-frying or grilling. The most popular method of cooking steak is in a griddle cast iron pan. In just a few minutes, your steak will be done. However, cooking your steak in an oven can also provide delicious results.

  1. There are several kinds of steak cuts available. Each cut has its own strengths in terms of flavor.  The first kind is the filet steak. This meat is very lean and doesn’t have much fat. It can be very tender but lacks flavor. Two more types that are common are the rib eye and sirloin cuts. Both are very flavorful due to the fat. The meat is also naturally delicious. Of course, the most popular steak of all is the filet mignon.

  2. When choosing the cut, you also have to make sure that the meat is fresh. Freshness will affect the taste.

The smell and appearance of the meat will help you determine its freshness.

  3. Marinate your steak in salt and pepper, olive oil and some herbs and additional spices of your choice. Salt, pepper and olive oil should be enough to bring out the natural taste of the meat. Let it marinate for at least an hour.

  4. If you are marinating inside the refrigerator, make sure that you expose the meat to room temperature for at least 30 minutes. If you are using it immediately, you can just marinate it at room temperature and be starting cooking right away.

  5. Heat your cast iron until it is nice and hot. Sear the steak to give it a golden brown color. This will take about four minutes. Make sure that you sear all sides of the steak. You can use a broiler, but a cast iron will provide a better overall outcome.

  6. Place your steak in a preheated oven set at about 325 degrees. This will cook the meat slowly. For a medium rare steak, cook it for about 15 to 20 minutes. Anything more than this will yield a well-done steak, which is not at all ideal. A steak should be pink on the inside.

  7. You can also use a meat thermometer to guide you to a perfectly cooked steak.  A rare steak should have a meat temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  A medium rare should be at 125 degrees. Perfect medium is at 130 degrees.

  8. The rule of the thumb is to let your steak sit for at least half the time that you cooked it. By doing so, all the juices will stay inside the meat, marinating it more and giving off a wonderful taste afterwards.

  9. You can serve steak with baked potatoes or greens. You can also make a gravy sauce out of the juices in the pan, which is an advantage when cooking in an oven. Just add some butter and wine and you can make a sauce.

  10. You can serve streak sliced or unsliced. The decision is yours. Enjoy the steak while it is hot. A steak that is served cold or reheated will ruin all the proper cooking you have done.

These tips on how to cook steak in the oven will give you the chance to explore other cooking possibilities. Remember that timing is all there is to preparing a perfect steak.
