Tofu has been an essential component of Asian cuisines for hundreds of years. Now it is becoming a very popular ingredient for vegetarian dishes in the Western world. It provides a meat-like texture and a great source of protein and calcium. Made from soybeans, water and a coagulant or curdling agent – it is well known for its ability to absorb new flavors through spices and marinades. Learning how to cook tofu stir fry is very easy. Just follow the procedures below:

  1. Choose healthy ingredients when cooking tofu. You will need these vegetables and spices: one peeled and sliced carrot, one seeded and cut into strips green bell pepper, one cup of drained and cut into pieces baby corn, one small head chopped bok choy or pechay, two cups of chopped fresh mushrooms, one and one-fourth cups bean sprouts, one drained and chopped cup bamboo shoots, a half teaspoon crushed red pepper and two diagonally sliced medium green onions.

Prepare the rest of the ingredients: a half cup water, four tablespoons rice wine vinegar, two tablespoons honey, two tablespoons soy sauce, two teaspoons cornstarch dissolved in two tablespoons water, one tablespoon vegetable oil, a half sliced medium onion, two finely chopped cloves garlic, one tablespoon of finely chopped fresh ginger root and one package of tofu or a 16 ounce pack, drained and cut into cubes.

  3. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large pan or skillet. Stir in onions for a minute, followed by garlic and ginger for around 30 seconds. Load in the tofu to cook until golden brown. Be careful in turning the tofu. They can easily break or turn into pieces with constant stirring. Just do the flipping carefully.

  4.  Add in the carrots, bell pepper and baby corn and cook for two minutes, followed by bok choy or pechay, mushrooms, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, and crushed red pepper. Cook these ingredients through. Remove from heat immediately after cooking. Do not over-cook vegetables. They are tastier and more nutritious when they are a bit crispy.

  5. Combine water, rice wine vinegar, honey and soy sauce in a sauce pan and simmer. Stir in cornstarch and water mixture after two minutes. Simmer until the sauce thickens. Pour the sauce over vegetables and tofu. You can garnish with scallions if you wish.

  6. Serve with rice – family style. Serve the tofu dish all in one big serving bowl and the rice in a separate rice container. You can cover the rice with a clean white cloth to keep it warm on the table. This will keep it fresh for any late guests.

Tofu can be prepared in many ways for Asian cooking, including raw, stewed, stuffed or stir-fried. The idea of using tofu as a meat substitute is formulated by vegetarians worldwide, but in traditional Oriental cooking, tofu dishes include real meat. Beef, pork, chicken and varieties of seafood are normally cooked with tofu. Just follow this quick-cooking procedure to learn how to cook tofu stir fry. Instead of stirring, expert chefs will just toss them into the air to turn them to the other sides. A little shake and wiggle will mix the ingredients. Commercial establishments normally do the cooking with intense heat or a big flame.
