How to Cure Dandruff

How to Cure Dandruff

Dandruff is the skin condition in which hairy areas of the body, particularly the scalp, possess white, dry flakes of dead skin. Aside from the inconvenience of itchiness and irritation, dandruff is highly visible on dark clothes. If you have mild dandruff, try out these tips on how to cure dandruff.

  1. Try natural treatments

Natural, inexpensive ways to combat dandruff are the best first steps to try. Sometimes dandruff results from an allergy to commercial shampoo or over-shampooing. Massaging the scalp with a 1:1 ratio of lime juice and vinegar will help cleanse the scalp and clear the dandruff.

Using oil is a great way to keep the scalp moisturized and lessen the dryness that causes dandruff. Apply warm coconut oil to your scalp at least twice a week and massage it in for thirty minutes. Many recovered dandruff sufferers swear by tea tree oil. Mix a teaspoon of tea tree oil into hot water and massage the mixture into your scalp. After a few minutes, wash your hair with lemon water then wash again with plain water.

Wrap your wet hair in a hot, damp towel and leave it on for some time.

For persistent dandruff, overnight treatments will provide lasting relief. Massage baby oil or a 1:1 mix of lime juice and olive oil into your scalp then wrap a towel around it before sleeping. Wash it out with shampoo in the morning.

  2. Use over-the-counter anti-dandruff preparations

There are many over-the-counter options for anti-dandruff shampoo. One can simply use a mild shampoo daily so it doesn’t dry out the scalp. Check the ingredients of the shampoo and choose those containing any of the following: tea tree oil (for a natural cure), zinc pyrithione (which kills a fungi that partially causes dandruff), salicylic acid (which softens dead skin cells), selenium sulfide (which kills fungi and slows skin cell production), ketoconazole (which is also anti-fungal), and coal tar (which lessens dead skin cells). Note that selenium sulfide is not advisable for those who are naturally blonde or have chemically treated hair. Also, ketoconazole should be applied twice a week and not more often.

Ask the pharmacist for guidance if needed. You can lessen the frequency of shampoo use once the symptoms let up. If the shampoo you’re using loses its effectiveness, choose another type.

  3. Take steps to prevent dandruff from occurring again

Once the treatment you are using clears the dandruff up, take precautions to prevent the recurrence of the condition. Dandruff is contagious, so avoid sharing combs with other people, especially those you know to suffer from dandruff. Wash your comb and hairbrushes every day, if not after each use, to help the treatment along. Do not keep your hair wet for a long time. Dandruff thrives on a wet scalp. Air-drying your hair is fine but avoid keeping it wet. Don’t tie it or cover it up after showering. Avoiding hairspray and mousse might help because their high alcohol content dries out the scalp.

A natural way to prevent dandruff is to apply egg shampoo to your scalp from time to time. Beat two to three eggs, add a little water to them then apply the mixture to your wet hair. Massage your scalp then leave it on for several minutes before washing it off. You can also use a rinse of lime juice with water after shampooing. This prevents dandruff and has the bonus of making the hair shine.

Stress and poor eating habits can also cause dandruff. You’d be surprised to learn that getting enough rest and eating raw fruits and vegetables are good habits for those who are trying to figure out how to cure dandruff.
