How to Cure Diarrhea Fast

For most people, the treatment for diarrhea is simply waiting it out. However, it can be very troublesome to go to the restroom every now and then, especially if you are out and about or at a social gathering. Moreover, it can disrupt your work schedule and cause some serious delays if you do not do anything about it. Fortunately, with the following ways on how to cure diarrhea fast, you can speed up the recovery process and quickly get back in the game.

  1. Always stay hydrated. Diarrhea can lead to rapid fluid loss and dehydration, so you have to make sure that your condition does not progress to that. Drink plenty of clear fluids like water, clear broth, and sports drinks, since these can replenish the electrolytes you lost. You can also buy over-the-counter electrolyte replacement formula. Otherwise, increase your intake of fluids to no less than 8 glasses a day, and avoid drinks that can further worsen your condition, such as coffee, soda, hot chocolate, and fruit juices.

  2. Eat yogurt. It contains live cultures that can treat diarrhea caused by oral antibiotics.

Some antibiotics kill the normal bacteria found in the intestines, thereby leading to stomach issues, but yogurt brings back those good bacteria and restores the balance.

  3. Stick to a BRAT diet, which stands for banana, rice, applesauce, and toast. These bland foods contain simple sugars and little acid, making them less likely to contribute to your diarrhea. In fact, these foods help soothe your intestines.

  4. Eat small portions. Avoid stressing your digestive system. Aside from eating more liquid foods, consume only small amounts of food at any given time. Break down your daily meals into five to six snacks per day and take small sips of water every now and then.

  5. Drink chamomile tea. It can relieve intestinal inflammation and prevent spasms. You can brew a cup by steeping 1 teaspoon of the flowers in a cup of boiling water together with 1 teaspoon of peppermint leaves for 15 minutes. Drink three cups per day for the best results.

  6. Get lots of rest. Just like with any other illness, you need rest to get rid of diarrhea quickly. Doing so lets your body use its energy to recuperate and fight off any viruses and bacteria that might be causing your diarrhea. It also helps reduce anxiety, which is one probable cause of diarrhea.

  7. Take over-the-counter medications. You can try taking antidiarrheal drugs if you want to experience instant relief. However, they may not be entirely good for you, as you might suffer from side effects or develop dependence on the drug. An example you can take is Pepto-Bismol, which has a mild antibacterial effect. You can also try Imodium to slow down motility in the gut and Kaopectate to help absorb fluid, which leads to watery stools.

  8. Avoid certain foods. Dairy products, except yogurt, can exacerbate diarrhea, so do not eat them until one to three weeks after your diarrhea stops. Moreover, stay away from caffeine and foods with high sugar content since these stimulate your intestines, which is definitely the last thing you need at this point. Lastly, steer clear of high fiber foods as well because they cause you to defecate more.

If you follow the tips mentioned above on how to cure diarrhea fast, you will stop the need to go in no time.
