how to cure epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that affects the central nervous system. Once there is an increased cranial activity in the brain, the brain will signal the central nervous system to react. The reactions include: unusual seizures, jerking body movements, blank stares, and unconsciousness. Depending on the cause of the disorder, there are still ways on how to cure epilepsy. Young children and older people are the most affected by this neurological disorder. In children, after their childhood years, epilepsy may finally resolve. However, there are also people who bear with the disorder all throughout their lives. Let us study helpful tips in treating epilepsy:

  1. Take anticonvulsants. These drugs are effective in alleviating the symptoms of epilepsy. In effect, seizure attacks are most unlikely to happen. Anticonvulsants have side effects. Hence, they can be taken only with a doctor’s prescription.

  2. Undergo surgery. This is the next treatment option if the patient is resistant to anticonvulsant drugs.

After a proper diagnosis, the surgeon decides which type of surgery is appropriate. It can either be a palliative operation, resection of lesions, or hemispherectomy. Surgery is possible only when the location of the affected area in the brain is properly identified.

  3. Undergo electrical stimulation. There is only one electrical stimulation procedure approved by the United States. It is called the Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) manufactured by Cyberonics. A pulse generator is implanted in the chest which connects with the vagus nerve in the neck area. The generator will then send weak, electrical signals at regular intervals from the vagus nerve to stimulate the brain. The releasing of weak, electrical signals prevents an electrical burst in the brain that causes epileptic seizures.

  4. Utilize a ketogenic diet. This diet regimen is mainly high in fat and low in carbohydrates. This is an effective approach irrespective of the cause of epilepsy. The fats are burned and ketones are increased which protect the nervous system from getting irritated. However, medical supervision is highly required in this kind of treatment since it can possibly cause diarrhea and kidney stones.

  5. Eliminate stress. Being stress-free plus regular exercise promote better blood circulation, which lowers the risk of epileptic symptoms. However, strenuous exercises are not advisable. Light, physical activities like yoga and a morning walk are good ways to release stress. Listening to good music while relaxing is an effective stress reliever.

  6. Avoid foods that are packed with glutamine. Foods that have a lower glutamine content like: rice, corn, and whole grains are effective against epileptic symptoms. However, not all grains are low in glutamine. Barley, wheat, and oats have a high glutamine content as well as cow’s milk, cheese, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, navy beans, pinto beans, soybeans, meat (except chicken), and lamb.

  7. Drink plenty of liquid. Water, vegetable juices, and fruit juices are important in the digestive system. Water is the best liquid to consume to avoid epileptic shock. Combining beetroot, cucumber, and carrots can supply sufficient antioxidants to the body which, in effect, help control the occurrence of epileptic seizures.

  8. Take supplements. First, zinc and magnesium supplements are known to help in controlling the recurrence of epileptic shock. When the body lacks a supply of these two elements, seizures are likely to occur. Second, herbal supplements such as Western Mistletoe, ginger root, jasmine flower, Irish moss, Fo-Ti, Lady’s Slipper, and cayenne red pepper are considered traditional remedies in treating epilepsy.

Epilepsy, being a neurological disorder, should be treated seriously. Medications must be properly prescribed by the doctor to avoid chronic complications. In case of a surgical operation, it must be done carefully in order to avoid further brain damage. Truly, the medical pursuit on how to cure epilepsy may take a long path, but with a proper diet, healthy lifestyle, and proper medications, the chance of getting cured is high.
