35mm film was developed by three brilliant people – George Eastman, who supplied the film stocks, Thomas Edison, and William Dickson. Dickson and Edison managed to introduce the film in 1892. Since then, this basic film gauge, otherwise known as 35mm film, has become the primary component in making motion pictures and as well as pictures generated by still photography. Because of the numerous wonders brought about by the advent of this film gauge, how to develop 35mm film became a challenge. 35mm film has been the standard size from the year 1909 up to the present day, despite the availability of the new sizes of film gauge ranging from 13 millimeters to 75 millimeters.  35mm film has a superior cost advantage compared to the other sizes of film gauge. It offers excellent image output while remaining inexpensive. If you have an innate passion for photography, you must learn how to develop your captured images. The steps below can help you develop your pictures all by yourself.

  1. The photo-film developing area must be dark.



    strong> Prepare your bathroom by making it dark as possible. Making it dark does not mean not to use light bulbs at all. You can use red or blue light bulbs. These bulb colors are proven photo-friendly. You have to cover the widows so that daylight cannot penetrate.

  2. Prepare the developing tank. The developing tank is one of the primary materials you will need in developing pictures all by yourself. You can buy this tank in any photo developing store. The tank contains a column where you can place the film reel. When the lid is on, the developing tank protects the photo film against unfriendly light. Use hot water when cleaning the tank, and allow it to dry completely.

  3. Prepare the photo-developing materials. Required materials must all be in place in your photo developing space. Put in place your developing tank, its lid, the film reel, and your 35mm slide-film canister. The next steps are crucial in developing the film, which should be done in total darkness. At this point, you should turn off the lights.

  4. Prepare the film. With the use of your can opener, open the film canister. Remember that you have to do this in absolute darkness. Once the canister is open, get a scissor and cut the lead of the film very carefully. The cut must be made right at the middle of the sprocket holes of the film.

  5. Mount the film onto the reel. Holding the film by the ends or edges, slowly insert or load it on the reel. Push the film and, at the same time, twist the reel in a back and forth motion until the film is perfectly mounted.

  6. Soak and rinse the film with water. With the film properly placed on the reel, place it into the developing tank’s center column. Screw the lid back on the developing tank. Then fill the tank with water to pre-soak the film for about a minute.

    Agitate the water inside the tank to properly soak the film. Twist and invert the tank to ensure that the film is properly soaked in the water. Repeat this process several times. Then, take out the water.

  7. Turn on the lights and prepare the developer solution. Just follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer on how to correctly prepare the developer solution. Get the right chemistry of your developer solution.

  8. Pour the developer solution into the developing tank. Make sure first that the proper temperature of the developer solution is attained. Again, just follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After 30-minutes has elapsed since the developer solution has been poured into the tank, shake the tank for 5 seconds. Tap the tank in order to release any air bubbles trapped inside. Then dispose of the solution.

  9. Rinse the film with water. Pour some water into the tank and agitate for about a minute and then throw the water out.

  10. Add fixer chemistry. Put fixer chemistry into the tank and shake the tank for 5 seconds every minute. Repeat this process for a period of 5 minutes. Do not drain the fixer solution carelessly. Properly dispose of it in the laboratory.

  11. Rinse with water. After soaking the film with the fixer solution, rinse it with water.

  12. Add the hypo-clear chemical. This time, fill the developing tank with your hypo-clear chemical. Shake the tank again for 2 two minutes, and then drain out the solution.

  13. Rinse with water for the last time. Continuously flush the film with water for 5 minutes in order to completely wash out the chemical solutions applied to it.

  14. Hang your films to dry. After rinsing, hang your film on a clothes-line using clothes-pins to hold it. You can also use a hanger and clothes-pin instead of a clothesline. Lock the bottom of the pin with another clothes-pin that will serve as weight to keep the film straight as you air-dry it.

You should also know that 35mm film is considered the most flexible film in terms of other applications. The film has undergone a series of modifications that include the application of sound and the ability to capture color.
