how to dispose of old computers

Computers are such a big part of our lives that it’s hard to imagine life without one. As the years go on, we demand more and more from our computers, and they eventually wear out. So we need to know how to dispose of old computers? They contain a lot of valuable metals and parts that can be recycled instead of ending up in a landfill. Also, the metal parts and other hardware components could pose serious environmental hazards. We must be responsible both in the use, and disposal, of our trusty old computers.

  1. Make sure it’s not upgradeable. Perhaps you think that your computer is too sluggish for your use, but it just may need new hardware, additional RAM, or some other adjustments. You can always use it as a spare computer or for spare parts.

  2. Wipe out your hard drive. Your computer hard drive has intimate information about you that any tech-savvy teenager can ferret out and use against you or use for his own advantage. Credit cards, PINs, and passwords all are dangerous in the hands of others.

ut deleting files and formatting hard drives are not enough to wipe out data from your computer. You need a wiping or erasing tool to do that. Find a good program and make sure your computer hard drive is clean before throwing it out.

  3. Pass it on. There are many ways you can give away, sell, or make charitable use of your old computer. You can give it to a relative, a church, or a non-profit organization. You can sell it on eBay, Craig’s List, or a garage sale. You can trade it in. Someone may be more than willing to give your old computer a new lease on life.

  4. Recycle it. Some manufacturers will recycle your old computer for free in exchange for buying a new one from them. You can find a recycling firm online, on the phone directory, or your computer manufacturer’s website, and inquire about how you can have your computer recycled responsibly. You may have to pay a fee for the service, but it’s a small price for the assurance it gives you that you did your part in keeping the environment and the earth safe.

  5. Dump it. But only if you really have no other option.

There is always a way to dispose of waste responsibly, especially waste that may pose serious risks to people and the environment. We need to learn how to dispose of old computers properly so as to protect ourselves and the environment. We can all do our share.
