How to Do Natural Makeup

Achieving a fresh-faced look may seem easy and effortless, but it can actually take more time than usual, especially if your skin is not in tip-top condition. However, with enough practice and a good skin care regimen, you can achieve that nude, no makeup look without breaking a sweat. Here are the essential steps to learning how to do natural makeup:

  1. Cleanse your face with a non-comedogenic product right for your skin type. Exfoliating with a facial scrub once or twice a week is recommended so you slough off dead skin cells and keep your skin from looking dull. The key to pulling off natural makeup is having a good base, which is your skin.

  2. Apply a light moisturizer to smoothen rough spots and help makeup to glide on easily and last longer. If you have dry skin, use sheer liquid foundation with moisturizing properties, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream. Dot the fluid on different parts of your face and spread the product all over evenly with your fingers or a makeup sponge, beginning with your nose, then chin, and finally your cheeks.

Then, do the same on your forehead and jawline.

  3. With a small brush, apply concealer on parts of your face that need it the most, such as under your eyes, around the sides of your nose, and on any blemishes you may have. Don't be heavy handed with the concealer if you don't want it to cake and crease.

  4. Set the concealer with a light dusting of loose or translucent powder of a similar shade using a large brush. If you think you’ve overdone it, squeeze out a little bit of light moisturizer on your palm, rub both palms together, and pat them lightly on your cheeks.

  5. Groom your brows. Pluck any stray hairs and fill in gaps or light spots with brow powder using a brush for a more natural look. If you have thick brows, you may need to brush them in place with a brow gel.

  6. Using soft brown and bronze eye tints, brush or pat some color onto your lids to give them some depth and definition without looking too made up. Line the outer edges of your upper lash line with a brown pencil. Don't line your bottom lids as this will make your makeup look unnatural.

  7. Curl your eyelashes and put on two coats of volumizing mascara so your lashes look thicker. Make sure you start as close to the roots as possible and wiggle the wand a bit as you let it move to the tips. This will help prevent clumping and boost volume. Dot a gold or pearl-hued highlighter on the inside corners of your eyes to add some sparkle and make you look rejuvenated.

  8. A cream blush will give you a dewy, glowing look. You can put on a brown or light pink on the apple your cheeks using a round, flat-topped brush for that naturally rosy or healthy appearance. Apply using circular strokes in a well-lit area so you avoid overdoing it. You only need a little blush for the no makeup look.

  9. Sheer peach gloss or lipstick is a safe choice as it goes with all skin tones and looks flattering. You can also use red lipstick—just blot your lips after applying one coat and put on a natural-colored gloss so you achieve that subtly rosy lip look.

If you want that sun-kissed, just-gone-to-the-beach look, use a bronzer instead of a blush. Brush this lightly on your cheeks, forehead, and the top of your nose. And voila, that's how to do natural makeup!
