How to Eliminate Foot Odor

How to Eliminate Foot Odor

Having smelly feet is a problem that most people don’t want to have but are actually suffering from. It seems unfair that after a long day’s work, you remove your shoes and socks only to be assaulted with the rather unpleasant odor of your feet. Foot odor is usually caused by the combination of sweat and bacteria on your feet. Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to get rid of foot odor. You don’t even have to pay for expensive treatments to remove the foul smell on your feet, for the remedies listed here can be done in the comfort of your own home. Here are the methods for how to eliminate foot odor:

  1. Keep your feet clean. The key to keeping your feet clean at all times is to regularly wash them, especially after a long day. However, washing with soap and water is not enough to get rid of bacteria and dead skin cells that cause your feet to emit a certain odor. When you wash your feet, use a pumice stone, washcloth, or brush to scrub off the dead skin cells and to exfoliate the surface of your feet. Use anti-bacterial soap and do not forget to scrub even the spaces between your toes.

  2. Keep your feet dry. Moisture on your feet provides bacteria with a perfect breeding ground. It does not matter whether the moisture comes from sweat or water that has not completely dried. Therefore, you should always make it a point that when you wash your feet, you are able to dry them thoroughly with a clean towel. Pay special attention to the spaces between your toes, since they are most often neglected.

  3. Let your feet breathe. If it is possible, choose open footwear like sandals, slippers, and peep-toe shoes to help your feet stay cool and to prevent them from sweating too much. If you really have to wear shoes, go for canvas or leather shoes rather than rubber or plastic since the former provides proper ventilation for your feet. Wear porous socks and change them every day. Do not wear the same socks two days in a row without washing them first.

  4. Make necessary dietary changes. Strong-flavored foods, such as garlic, peppers, and onions, can produce not just foot odor, but also body odor. Once these foods are digested, their flavors and aromas pass through the bloodstream and are excreted through your sweat glands as waste products, hence producing a funky odor. By eliminating these from your diet, you are not only preventing foot odor, but body odor as well.

  5. Take note of foot odor remedies. There are many natural remedies for foot odor. One of them is liquid chlorophyll, which can help sweeten the smell of your feet. Pour two or three teaspoons of liquid chlorophyll in a gallon of warm water, then soak your feet in it for about 15 minutes. You may also soak your feet in a footbath made with natural apple cider, lemon, or even vodka.

  6. Apply antiperspirant on your feet. You can prevent excessive sweating that can lead to foot odor by applying antiperspirant to the soles of your feet. In addition, you can use foot powders or sprays to combat foot odor. These include talcum powder with its astringent properties, baking soda that can balance the feet’s pH levels, and cornstarch, which absorbs sweat.

By following the above-mentioned steps on how to eliminate foot odor, you are paving the way for a more hygienic lifestyle without the fear of embarrassment because of foot odor. As the saying goes, clean feet symbolize a clean body.
