how to enroll in Medicare Part D

When you or your loved one is sick and injured, medical care is not enough. Prescription drugs are part and parcel of the treatment, healing, and recovery process. So if you are enrolled in Medicare, then you should avail yourself of the part that provides coverage for prescription drugs. You should make sure to deal with how to enroll in Medicare Part D as soon as you are eligible for it. Even if you aren't currently taking any medications, it’s still best to enroll in Medicare Part D. Medical emergencies can occur anytime. By enrolling ahead, you will be covered when you need it. Here’s what you need to do regarding how to enroll in Medicare Part D:

  1. Ensure eligibility. To be eligible for Plan D, you must first be enrolled in Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) or Medicare Plan B (medical insurance).  You must be at least 65 years old and an American citizen in order to qualify for either Plans A or B. If you are receiving Supplementary Salary Income (SSI) from Social Security, then you may also be eligible.

may sign up for Plan D anytime or three months before you will be enrolled, and three months after enrollment. The best time to enroll for prescription drug coverage is anytime within that six-month period; doing so at a later date may make you liable for penalties and cost you more in premiums. If you don’t enroll within that six-month period of eligibility, you may do so between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31. And should your existing plan be discontinued, or if special circumstances arise, you may also be able to apply for enrollment.

  2. Evaluate various plans. There are different types of prescription drug coverage offered by Medicare. Find the one that best suits your needs taking into consideration your present cost for medications, your medical condition, and income level. If you are currently on medication, check to see if the plan covers it. Some plans cover only specific medications. Some only cover generic brands and may not include those brands specifically required by you or your doctor. Some plans will only pay a certain amount, and you will have to shoulder anything beyond that amount. So you have to check closely. You also need to make sure the plan’s pharmacy partner is located at a place near you or readily accessible to you.

  3. Estimate the cost. You need to take into account the cost involved. This may likely include premiums, amount payable monthly, the deductibles, and the amount you must pay to make up for what the insurance won’t cover. Alternatively, you can speak with a Medicare insurance agent or go to the Medicare website to pick a plan that will work for you. If you aren’t taking medication at present, you can opt for one with the lowest premium.

  4. Enroll in Medicare Plan D. You can do this the old-fashioned way by filing the paperwork by mail, or you can go online and enroll with a Medicare provider directly. You can also call Medicare’s toll free number to enroll by phone. You will be asked for some information that’s on the card so have it close by when you call.

Enrollment in Medicare Part D is optional but is strongly recommended to ensure that when you need to avail yourself of medical insurance, your need for medicines is also covered. Besides, medical emergencies are mostly sudden and unexpected. You never know when you will need it. Since medicines can cost as much as the medical treatment itself, it pays to be prepared. The steps above will provide you adequate preparation for how to enroll in Medicare Plan D.
