How to Get a Good Tan

One of the biggest frustrations for fair-skinned people who want to get a tan is that tanning is very difficult. They seem to go from achieving the slightest shade of tan imaginable straight to getting sunburned by staying out in the sun for too long.   1. Get tanned under the sun. If you have the luxury of vacationing by the beach, then the best way to get your tan is to bask under the sun. However, tanning is different from getting roasted, so you have to take some precautionary measures if this is your method of choice. Be sure to apply a sunscreen before you go out. Sunscreens allow some of the rays of the sun to penetrate your skin, while still protecting your skin from absorbing the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Do not wear a sunblock because it completely blocks the rays of the sun. If you are going swimming, choose a water-resistant sunscreen and let it sit on your skin for 15 minutes before swimming.

  2. Avoid the peak sun hours.

    If you want to get a tan but want to avoid getting sunburned, do not go out between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. The sun’s rays are strongest during these times, and no matter how much sunscreen you use, you will most likely just get out of it with a sunburn rather than a tan. In addition, get out of the sun when your skin starts to feel hot and itchy. This means that your skin is already getting irritated.

  3. Wear a swimsuit. The only areas that tan are the places that are exposed to the sun. Hence, the best thing to do in order to achieve the perfect tan with no tan lines at all is to go naked under the sun. This practice, however, is generally frowned upon in public areas, and in most places (except for specially designated nude beaches), it is illegal, so unless you have a very private sunbathing spot, just wear a swimsuit to minimize your tan lines. In addition, you should also change positions while you tan so that your front, sides, and back receive even exposure.

  4. Wear a hat instead of sunglasses. There is nothing more embarrassing than having tan lines on your face. However, it is very important to protect your eyes since the rays of the sun can burn your eyes as well. Therefore, simply wear a hat instead of shades to protect your eyes. You can also just close your eyes under the sun.

  5. Hydrate and moisturize. Drinking plenty of water is important before you start tanning under the sun, and even while you are in the middle of it. This will keep your body hydrated. Moreover, do not be afraid to go swimming because this will not harm your tanning. Just make sure to reapply your sunscreen afterwards. It is also important to apply moisturizer on your skin after tanning to prevent your skin from becoming flaky and dry.

Aside from knowing how to get a good tan under the sun, you also have other options if you don’t have the chance to go to the beach during summer. Some people prefer to go to tanning salons in order to get the perfect tan. It is almost the same as sunbathing, but in a more controlled environment. Others prefer tanning sprays and creams, although they take quite some time to take effect. Whatever method you choose, always remember that safe and gradual is the key to getting a good tan.
