How to Get Rid of Acne

Acne is one of the most common problems which teenagers and adults complain about. While it may be considered a minor skin problem, ranking low on the list of medical concerns, its ill effects cannot be underestimated. If allowed to go unaddressed, acne can plague one’s self-esteem and performance. Aside from being a bothersome skin condition in its own right, acne can be indicative of health problems like insulin resistance and PCOS. The question of how to get rid of acne is, therefore, related to its underlying factors. There are four common causes: hormonal imbalance, poor dietary habits, a combination of too little sleep and too much stress, and poor skin care. Based on the four acne-causing factors enumerated above, here are our recommendations on how to get rid of your acne woes:

  1. Begin with your skin care regimen and hygiene. These will go a long way towards treating existing breakouts and preventing new ones from developing. Salicylic acid-based products are good at drying out acne and killing the bacteria on the skin, but they tend to cause drying.

Hence, their use should be complemented with the use of a non-comedogenic moisturizer to restore the skin’s balance. A good skin care regimen would include a facial wash to remove the dirt and oil, a toner to tighten pores and remove the dirt which the cleanser couldn’t remove, a moisturizer, and an acne cream for spot treatment.

  2. Leave your skin free from makeup for as long as you can. Makeup just sits on top of the skin, making it easier for sweat and oil to get trapped in the pores. Also, various makeup ingredients can irritate the skin and trigger acne. Known offenders include bismuth oxychloride, silicone, and talc, among others.

  3. If you have to wear makeup, choose products that do not contain ingredients to which your skin is sensitive. As much as you can, pick those from which your skin can actually benefit. Certain product lines, such as Asian BB creams, claim to nourish the skin apart from providing coverage and correction.

  4. Avoid touching your skin with bacteria carriers. These include a lot more things than you might think. For instance, your hands and your own hair can transfer bacteria and oil to your face. Unwashed makeup tools like brushes and applicators will contaminate your skin and your beauty products. Even everyday stuff like your cell phone or pillowcase could introduce more acne-triggering bacteria to your face.

  5. Seek a medical prescription. Oftentimes, acne can be attributed to systemic factors like a hormonal imbalance or systemic infection. Consulting a doctor about it allows you to attack the root cause. Some common prescriptions for acne include clindamycin, metformin, and even oral contraception pills. These address complex medical issues which can impact the state of your skin.

Aside from the focus on giving your skin the treatment it deserves, the key to learning how to get rid of acne is to understand that it really takes some lifestyle changes to prevent it from recurring. As the body’s largest organ, the skin reflects a person’s state of health. Eating right, sleeping well, and reducing stress are as crucial for clear skin as the most potent acne cream.
