How to Get Rid of Acne on your Back

How to Get Rid of Acne on your Back

Unlike the acne on your face, back acne, sometimes called “bacne,” can be covered by a shirt and hidden from the world. However, you will still want to cure it since it is uncomfortable and is probably a turn-off for people who see you at the beach. Acne also causes scarring when left untreated. Since the back is less accessible to you compared to other parts of your body, it may be a challenge to treat the acne, but it can be done. There are several factors that cause acne, and this can help you identify how to stop it. Here are some methods for how to get rid of acne on your back.

  1. Remove impediments to skin breathability

Some acne is caused by friction, heat, or pressure. If you are athletic or ride a bike and you often wear a helmet, you may notice that you have pimples under your chin where the strap is normally tied or on your hairline where the helmet is in contact with your skin. Musicians who play string instruments can have acne on their chin area, where the instrument usually rests. Similarly, your “bacne” may occur due to tight uniforms of synthetic fabric or the pressure from the car seat on your back.

ackpack often carried around can cause pimples as well. Identify the items you normally wear and use that can be causing your “bacne” and either eliminate them or make changes. You can carry less in your backpack to lighten it or switch it out completely for a handbag. You can buy a spare helmet to wear alternately with your current one. Wear loose or well-fitting cotton clothes to help your skin breathe and soak up sweat. When you make these changes, you can stop acne from worsening as you start treating it.

  2. Visit the beach

The embarrassment that “bacne” causes does not mean you’ll have to avoid the beach. On the contrary, going to the beach may prove to be an effective treatment for you. Soaking your back in the saltwater for ten minutes will help clean the pores and exfoliate the skin. Afterwards, sit in the sun for around ten minutes to dry out the pimples. Repeat several times during the day as you hang out at the beach. Make sure that you don’t stay in the sun for too long, so you won’t get sunburned.

  3. Switch to medicated products

Stop using your regular soap in the meantime and switch to an anti-bacterial cleanser. The cleanser can be a facial cleanser as long as it is labeled anti-bacterial. You can use an oil-free, medicated body wash with 2% salicylic acid as an active ingredient. Before rinsing, let the medicated cleanser stay on your skin for around two minutes, so it can do its work.

Salicylic acid dries out the skin, so you can add a moisturizer to your skin regimen. A good moisturizer to use is one that is non-comedogenic, so it doesn’t block pores and helps with the treatment. You can also use moisturizer medicated with glycolic acid.

  4. Use topical treatments

Topical treatments are applied directly to the affected area. If the above methods do not work, your dermatologist may prescribe a benzoyl peroxide cream that you will need to rinse off well so that it doesn’t stain or bleach your clothes. The doctor may also recommend topical antibiotics that kill bacteria that cause pimples. However, use antibiotics sparingly or as a last resort to avoid building a resistance to them. You can also take oral retinoids such as Vitamin A supplements to help with the treatment.

These tips for how to get rid of acne on your back are often enough to address the problem. However, if the problem is persistent and cannot be treated by the above-mentioned methods after several months, doctors suggest three more intensive treatments—dermabrasion, phototherapy, and surgery. Microdermabrasion literally removes skin from your back including the blemishes and scars on it. Phototherapy directs short bursts of intense light to the affected area to reduce outbreaks and scarring. Surgery is for very severe cases of large and painful zits.
