How to Get Rid of Acne Scars

Ok, so for the first time in years, your acne breakouts have ceased and you can finally start feeling better about your skin. Unfortunately, the blemishes have left their marks behind, reducing any pleasure you may feel about finally having clear skin. The truth is, unless you find out how to get rid of acne scars, those dark spots and pitted areas are not going to go away. Acne scars are really best addressed in a dermatologist’s clinic. Scarring is a sign that the damage to the skin has gone deeper than the superficial layers. Special care must be taken if the treatment is to work; also, you want to avoid doing more harm than good. There are various ways to get rid of acne scars, and they range from traditional home remedies to modern procedures which can cost thousands of dollars. We narrow this field a little and present you with some of the tried-and-tested solutions that might work for you:

  1. You can get rid of acne scarring in two primary ways: you can lighten the acne scars if they are flat; if they are pitted and deep, you will need to remove the skin layers which contain them until you get to the layers where they do not show at all.

The latter is possible because skin cells are stratified, meaning that they are built upon each other layer by layer. The newest cells originate from the basal skin layer, and as they mature, they get pushed out to make way for younger ones. Obviously, this requires a more complicated course of treatment, like multiple sessions of dermabrasion or chemical peels. Because these are risky procedures, they are best done by a doctor.

  2. Meanwhile, for acne scars that are not severe enough to require deep chemical peeling, you can try natural home remedies. Fresh lemon juice, dabbed on dark spots and left for about 15 minutes before washing off, is a popular home remedy. The high acidity of lemon juice gives it bleaching properties. However, using this method means that you have to be more rigorous about using sunblock to protect your skin.

  3. Aside from bleaching, you can try nourishing the skin to hasten the regeneration of new cell layers. This will facilitate the shedding of the dull, old skin cells. Given enough time, the acne scarring should be diminished. Aloe vera gel, milk, honey, and almond milk are commonly used as facial masks because of their high nutritive content.

  4. Gentle exfoliation can also speed up acne-scar fading. This can involve an at-home treatment like using a mild facial scrub on a daily basis, or going for a diamond peel or glycolic peel every couple of weeks. A diamond peel uses a vacuum tube to brush diamond dust over the skin’s surface, while a glycolic peel uses fruit acids to slough off the outermost skin layers.

In addition to the scar-targeting interventions enumerated above, knowing how to get rid of acne scars includes taking good care of the skin. You should invest in good facial products which work well on your particular skin type and condition. These products do not have to be expensive, but they have to be effective without being damaging to your skin. Product recommendations and blog reviews can help a lot in this respect. If you keep your skin clean and moisturized, the acne scars will become less noticeable as your skin quality improves. And just as importantly, proper skin care will go a long way towards preventing future skin eruptions.
