How to Get Rid of Age Spots Naturally

Age spots, sun spots, or liver spots—no matter which name you prefer, all refer to the same thing: sun damage. Age spots are flat, brown spots that appear on the skin as a result of exposure to UV rays, whether from the sun, tanning beds, or even overhead lighting. They are basically concentrated areas of melanin, which is the body’s way of protecting the deeper skin layers from further damage. As people grow older, age spots occur more frequently. At first glance, age spots can pass off as freckles, except that they don’t fade on their own like freckles  eventually do. Although age spots are generally harmless, they can detract from the appearance of the skin, making it look “dirty” and uneven. Ironically, those with fair skin are the ones who are more prone to developing sun spots, making these areas of hyperpigmentation much more obvious. If you would like to enjoy a more even-toned complexion without resorting to painful and expensive dermatological procedures, here’s how to get rid of age spots naturally:

  1. One of the most effective agents for natural bleaching is lemon juice, and it can also be quite effective for age spots.

cleansing your face, apply freshly squeezed lemon juice on the dark areas and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Obviously, you have to make sure that there aren’t any breaks in the skin, or it could sting quite a bit. After 20 minutes, you can rinse the juice off and continue with your regular skin care regimen. For best results, do this every day. You can also create a DIY facial mask by mixing lemon juice with plain yogurt, almond oil, or honey to make it more soothing.

  2. Lemon juice can be a little too acidic for some people, especially if you are prone to breakouts or if you still have some active skin damage like sunburn. A gentler way to lighten age spots naturally is to use pure aloe vera gel. If you have an aloe vera plant, all you need to do is to break off one of the succulent leaves and apply it directly to your face; otherwise, purchase a tube off 100% organic aloe vera gel from your local health store. Leave the aloe gel on for about 30-45 minutes and rinse off; repeat daily and you should see your sun spots diminishing.

  3. If you would like to see faster results and you do not have any sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide, try this: steam the skin for 20-30 minutes to open up the pores and use a Q-tip to apply 12% hydrogen peroxide only on the areas that you want to lighten. Allow the hydrogen peroxide to dry, and then rinse off after half an hour. If you don’t observe any signs of irritation like redness, itching, or discomfort, you could go for a more intensive application. This time, instead of washing your face off after half an hour, you can take a small piece of peroxide-soaked cotton wool and secure it to the skin using medical-grade micro pore tape (available over the counter in most drugstores). Let the cotton wool stay on overnight, and wash it off in the morning.

While it is useful to know how to get rid of age spots naturally, it’s even better to prevent them from developing in the first place. Always wear sunscreen whenever you go out of the house, especially during the peak hours of UV ray exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are going to be out in the sun for more than two to three hours, remember that you will need to reapply the sunscreen because constant contact with the natural acids of the skin breaks it down. Aging is an inevitable process, and unfortunately, age spots are part of that. However, sensible skin care habits and eating an anti-oxidant rich diet could help your body fight off free radicals that contribute to the occurrence of age spots.
