How to Get Rid of Big Acne Bumps

Some people’s biggest nightmare is waking up with a big acne bump on the face. Such huge pimples can affect your self-esteem and be a source of embarrassment throughout the day. You might try popping it to no avail, and you might even dread leaving your house with a conspicuous, fresh zit. At times, it can even be pretty painful, especially when you press on it. If you happen to find yourself in this situation, here are some tips on how to get rid of big acne bumps:

  1. Wash your face two times a day. Bacteria that accumulate on your skin lead to acne. Therefore, make sure to wash your face with a mild facial soap and water once in the morning and once at night before going to bed. Apply moisturizer after washing your face. Moreover, before washing your face, wash your hands first, and only use clean towels to pat your face dry since they can also be sources of bacteria that can cause zits. In addition, use an exfoliating facial scrub once a week to remove dead skin cells.

  2. Apply topical peroxide treatments.

One common over-the-counter acne treatment is benzoyl peroxide. Aside from killing bacteria, it also peels dead skin cells. You can apply benzoyl peroxide on your acne marks, but make sure that you use the right concentration to avoid irritating your skin. Better yet, consult your dermatologist regarding the use of benzoyl peroxide.

  3. Use an ice pack. Swelling is very common with big pimples, so place an ice pack on the acne bump to reduce the redness and swelling. This will slow down the blood circulation in that area, thereby reducing swelling. If you find the ice pack is too cold, you can wrap it in a towel or gauze first.

  4. Apply tea tree oil. Another substance that can help you get rid of acne bumps and at the same time decrease swelling and redness is tea tree oil. Simply dab a Q-tip in tea tree oil and rub it on your acne bumps. Its antibacterial action helps kill the microbes that cause pimples. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory properties can help make your zits less noticeable.

  5. Apply vitamin E oil on your pimples. More often than not, big acne bumps leave acne scars on your face. You can prevent this from happening by applying vitamin E oil on these bumps twice a day. Vitamin E can help reduce the appearance of acne scars on your skin. It also helps the fibers of your skin connect more quickly and therefore promotes faster healing.

  6. Avoid pricking your pimples. No matter how irritating your pimples might appear, you should not pop or scratch them because it will only worsen the redness and irritation. Furthermore, this will lead to the development of acne scars, which are harder to get rid of than pimples.

  7. Visit your dermatologist. If you have tried all the treatments above and your acne bumps still persist, consult a dermatologist or skin specialist. Aside from topical acne treatments, your dermatologist might prescribe oral antibiotics to help get rid of the pimple-causing bacteria on your skin. He or she will also be able to prescribe more potent anti-acne topical treatments that are not available over-the-counter.

People often try to get rid of pimples by popping them prematurely, not knowing that this will further damage their skin. Knowing how to get rid of acne bumps can help you prevent acne without causing more trouble to your skin.
