how to get rid of clogged pores

Clogged pores can mar the overall appearance of the face by making the skin look dirty or dull. Putting on makeup is not how to get rid of clogged pores. Makeup may even worsen the condition. Clogged pores are caused by shed skin cells that become stuck in the pores, rather than coming off the surface. When dirt, oil and other debris get into the pores and attach to the shed skin that is already there, they cause clogged pores. Eventually, these turn into blackheads and whiteheads that become infected, or that may cause an acne breakout. It is important to keep skin clog-free and clear both for aesthetic and health reasons. Here are ways to rid pores of clogs.

  1. Since the primary cause of clogged pores is impurities, be scrupulous about cleansing your face morning and night. You need to get your face cleansed of shed skin, dirt, oil, makeup and sweat, which can hide in your pores. Also, during the day, make sure to keep your hands, hair and other things from unnecessarily touching your face. Hands, hair, etc. easily deposit dirt, oils, hair products and other impurities on the face.

Keep your face clean with a cleanser that contains salicylic acid ingredients to spur turnover of skin cells.

  2. Apply astringent or toner to control oil on your face. Excess oil can clog your pores and make it easy for dirt and impurities to stick to the skin. Using a cotton ball, rub the toner or astringent in small circular motions.

  3. Exfoliate regularly, as often as two to three times a week. Exfoliation serves as a scrub that sloughs off dead or shed skin so that these don’t clog your pores. You can make a simple sugar scrub (equal parts white sugar, brown sugar and olive oil, optionally with a few drops of vanilla or essential oil for fragrance) to use as exfoliant.

  4. Deep-cleanse weekly. Wet a washcloth with warm water and put it over your face for ten to fifteen minutes to open your pores, and then apply a mask. This serves to remove deep-seated dirt and effectively cleanse it more than daily surface cleansing does. Finish by sprinkling cold water on the face to close the pores.

  5. If you need a one-time treatment fast, you can get a facial treatment from a trained aesthetician. This is not a miracle-cure, however. After a facial treatment, your skin will need a recovery period, so don’t schedule a facial on the very day you need clear, glowing skin. Have the facial treatment several days before so that your skin has time to heal.

  6. For worse problems, you can opt for a facial peel or microdermabrasion treatment. Both these processes will remove dead skin cells and reveal the healthy, dewy skin underneath. Facial peels usually use AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) to exfoliate the skin deeply, while microdermabrasion uses a machine and crystals – and operated by a trained aesthetician – to deep clean the skin and remove clogs from pores. You can then maintain unclogged pores by observing the regimen described above. For these options, always get the services of a trained professional, as attempting to unclog pores yourself could result in scarring, infection or other skin injury.

Remember that regular maintenance is essential. Pores don’t get clogged overnight; dirt piles up over a period of time and causes problems. So maintaining a regular cleansing regimen helps remove impurities and prevents dirt and shed skin cells from piling up. When considering how to get rid of clogged pores, the important thing is ridding the pores of dirt before they get a chance to clog up.
