How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Dandruff or seborrhea is not really considered a serious medical condition except in those rare cases where it leads to other problems, like psoriasis. However, it is so embarrassing and bothersome that those who suffer from it are bound to want to know how to get rid of dandruff as soon as possible. According to dermatologists, getting rid of dandruff is not necessarily hard, but because the rate of recurrence is high, treatment may need to continue for weeks. Dandruff is actually caused by a skin fungus called Malasezzia furfur. There are two kinds of dandruff: dry seborrhea and oily seborrhea. Dry seborrhea produces fine flakes accompanied by a reddened, irritated scalp and dull hair. Meanwhile, oily seborrhea has dense flakes, skin thickening and severe scalp itching. Dry seborrhea tends to be more embarrassing because the flakes tend to pepper down the shoulders and other surfaces. However, oily seborrhea comes with its fair share of discomfort. Regardless of the type of dandruff you suffer from, no doubt you are looking for ways to get rid of it with the least amount of trouble.

Here’s how:

    1. Some of the common causes of dandruff include overwashing the hair or not washing it frequently enough, irritation because of hair product residue, the use of the wrong shampoo, or trapped moisture in the scalp. Although there are other factors which can affect the growth of seborrhea, dry seborrhea is generally associated with excessively frequent shampooing, while oily seborrhea is the opposite. Therefore, the first step you must take is to reexamine the intervals between your hair washing. Hair experts would generally recommend shampooing hair every other day so that the natural hair oils get a chance to lubricate the scalp. However, you need to determine whether this is right for you. You may need to wash your hair every day, or just twice a week.

    2. Review your current hair care regimen. If your dandruff problems started recently, try to determine whether any newly-introduced hair products could be causing them. Has the weather changed, or is your scalp condition different? Whatever the case, maybe your standby products are no longer addressing your needs. You may need to switch to something with a lighter/richer formulation.

    3. Cleanse your scalp. You may be very careful about washing your hair regularly, but even shampoos and conditioners can leave buildup on your scalp. Every once in a while, use a cleansing shampoo to strip product residue from your scalp. The intervals between cleansing efforts will really depend on how your scalp responds.

    4. Deep conditioning treatments can provide much-needed moisture and soothing, especially for dry seborrhea. Look for a product that is mild and not heavily-scented to minimize the risk of further irritation.

    5. People whose scalps tend to sweat a lot are much more likely to have dandruff, because the salt and moisture can cause the scalp to act up. Sweat also encourages the growth of fungi. On hot and active days, rinse the scalp immediately to get rid of the sweat (you may even opt not to use shampoo). On days when jumping into the shower right away is not possible, sprinkling some dry shampoo on could help.

    6. Let the scalp breathe as much as it can. Fungi thrive in dark and moist areas, and the scalp is not an exception. Let your hair dry before you tie it back tightly or wear headgear. If you can handle shaving your head or getting your hair cut short, it might help.

    7. Use a shampoo especially formulated for dandruff. Look for ingredients like selenium sulfide, zinc, tea tree oil, or salicylic acid. Dandruff shampoos, when used according to directions, can curtail the growth of seborrhea. Used in conjunction with the tips above, they can very well end your scalp misery.

These tips on how to get rid of dandruff should help you keep things in check. However, if you find that the situation seems to be getting worse, consult a dermatologist. Your dandruff could be due to other factors, for instance, hormonal imbalance.
