How to Get Rid of Diarrhea Fast

At one point or another, we have all experienced needing to go to the bathroom, clutching our stomachs from the cramps caused by diarrhea. It can be a major hassle, especially when it strikes while we are at work, school or even while traveling. Having to use the nearest toilet despite uncertain sanitation is a dreaded experience for many. Aside from having frequent bowel trips, loose and watery stools, stomach cramps and sometimes feelings of fatigue and nausea, diarrhea can also lead to dehydration. Most people can fairly agree that when diarrhea strikes, getting rid of it the fastest way possible becomes of utmost importance. However, understanding how and why you get diarrhea is also as important as knowing how to get rid of diarrhea fast. Diarrhea can have several causes. For most people, diarrhea is caused by bacteria or viral infection ingested through food and drink. Ingesting parasites or contaminated food and drink also causes irregular bowel movements. Having these pathogens in your system can wreak havoc in your digestive system, which causes your colon or large intestine to become inflamed and unable to digest or absorb the water that your body needs. This is why diarrhea, although quite common, must be attended to immediately as the threat of dehydration is by no means harmless. Here are sure-fire ways to manage diarrhea and stop it quickly:

  1. Take Loperamide. This drug relieves the painful stomach cramps and the painful bowel movements by discontinuing the muscle contractions in your intestines. The common brands for this drug are Imodium, Maalox and Pepto Bismol. It is very effective for immediate relief from diarrhea and other digestive problems. However, it must be said that it does not necessarily resolve the root of diarrhea, which is the presence of pathogens in your system. Other steps must be done to totally get rid of what is causing the digestive problems.

  2. Use activated carbon. This natural substance is very helpful in eliminating the bacteria, virus or parasite that is causing the irregular bowel movement and accompanying symptoms. It can be taken in the form of pills. If this is unavailable, burning a piece of white toast and scraping the black part into a glass of boiled water can also work. Activated carbon works as well; however, not everyone may be able to handle activated carbon, so it is best to consult a physician before using this remedy.

  3. Use garlic or lemon. These contain substances that also help your system expel the bacteria, virus or parasite thatís causing the diarrhea. Either take them pure and raw (two cloves for garlic or one whole lemon) or take them with water or some edible leaf to help manage the taste.

  4. Avoid dairy, alcoholic and caffeinated products. These worsen diarrhea as they inhibit the digestive processes that are needed to manage this condition. They must be avoided during bouts of diarrhea as they will worsen or prolong the condition.

  5. Harden stools. Eat food that will help harden your stools and get rid of the loose, watery stools that swiftly pass through your system. Bananas, brown rice, yogurt, toast and applesauce are great with digestion and can help get rid of watery bowels.

  6. Keep hydrated. Lastly, but most importantly, make sure to counter possible dehydration by drinking electrolyte-rich drinks like Gatorade. This will help provide your body with the hydration lost due to diarrhea.

Follow these steps and you can learn how to get rid of diarrhea fast. One must remember, that diarrhea could also be indicative of another underlying condition. Make sure to consult your physician if problems persist.
