How to Get Rid of Dog Ear Mites

Ear mites may be very small in size but they cause a lot of discomfort and pain to your pet dog. The symptoms to watch for are constant scratching of the ear, increased discharge of ear wax, puss, shaking its head constantly, walking in circles like it is disoriented, being imbalanced when your dog stand up and walk, fever and in the worst case scenario, lethargy. This is enough damage to your dog’s health which should be prevented. Therefore as pet owner, you should know how to get rid of dog ear mites. Strive to do the following:

  1. Bring your pet to your veterinarian when you see any of the symptoms mentioned above on your dog. He will know best on what remedy or treatment to recommend depending on the severity of the ear mite infestation.  If infection is already present, he will most probably recommend antibiotic aside from the topical ear ointment and pain reliever if needed. The dosage is important as an overdose would definitely be disadvantageous to your dog’s health. Follow the frequency of administering the medications as recommended by your vet.

  2. Apply mineral oil in your dog’s inner ear if the infestation is not so severe yet. Let it reach as deep inside the ear canal as more ear mites settle there. Drop a few drops and massage. This will not only loosen the ear wax and debris but also kill the ear mites. Do this twice daily and wipe off the extra oil with a cotton ball.  Dispose used cleaning supplies properly as mites can easily transfer to furniture, rags and carpets. Observe the condition of your dog’s ear from the time you started applying the mineral oil on its ear. If you see that the symptoms did not stop, then it is time to see the vet as the infestation may already be very severe and would need stronger medication.

  3. See your vet also when the incident of ear mite infestation is repetitive. Chances are, they are not totally eradicated with the mineral oil remedy or there are other reasons for it to always come back.

  4. Religiously clean your pet’s living area as a preventive measure. Make sure its beddings are warm and clean. It should be replaced with new and clean ones once it’s soiled. Disinfect if you must as mites don’t thrive in a very clean and tidy environment. When the ear mite is very active, make sure you don’t go very near the ear area as it can easily transfer to another host. Other pets should also be isolated in the meantime.

  5. Give your pet dog healthy food all the time. When it is in perfect health, its resistance to parasites and disease is strong. Give some supplements as recommended by your vet to further boost their immune system to parasites and allergens.

Ear mites in dogs should not be left unattended. Your dog is totally dependent on your caring for them in order to get rid of the disgusting parasites. Ear mite infestation is a threat to your dog’s health and wellbeing. Day to day activities will really be hampered due to the discomfort and the changes in its attitude when it responds to the irritant and pain. It is not enough to just treat - it must be prevented from coming back. Make sure you know how to get rid of dog ear mites permanently. Take it as a challenge and don’t let it get in the way with the enjoyment you and your pet should be having if not for it.
