How to Get Rid of Peeling Skin after Sunburn

A summer day spent lounging on the beach may be an appealing idea, but the sunburn that usually comes afterwards is not. Not only is it painful but the peeling skin that soon follows looks unsightly. It usually resolves within a few days, so you do not need to worry, and you can simply let it run its course. However, if you really must remove peeling skin, you need to be very careful because improperly removed skin can cause irritation, scarring, and even infection. Learn the proper way for how to get rid of peeling skin after sunburn using the following tips:

  1. Take a lukewarm bath every day. In preparation for removing your peeling skin, you should take a lukewarm bath at least once or twice a day. Avoid using hot water to take a bath because it will just irritate and dry out your skin. Instead, a lukewarm bath will soothe your skin and cause it to loosen up to make it easier for peeling.

  2. Exfoliate your skin. Skin exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. You can create your own natural exfoliating agent by making an oatmeal scrub.

Simply submerge the oats in warm water to soften them, and then apply them on your sunburnt area. A homemade oatmeal scrub is perfect for sunburnt skin because of its mildness. Another gentle homemade scrub that you can use is a sugar and almond mixture, as the sugar crystals gently exfoliate your skin while the almond granules deeply hydrate.

  3. Moisturize your skin. If you want to get rid of peeling skin quickly, you should make it a point to moisturize your skin. After getting out of the shower, apply a moisturizing lotion especially designed for peeling or sunburnt skin. Ideally, this lotion should contain aloe vera, which cools and reduces inflammation, soothing your skin. Just make sure that you buy an aloe vera lotion without fragrances and dyes since they can further irritate your skin. You can even apply pure aloe vera by directly applying the plant gel on the sunburnt area.

  4. Hydrate your skin. Along with moisturizing your skin, keeping it hydrated is also a must to let your skin heal from the inside. Hydration is very important when you have damaged skin, since it makes the healing and repair process faster. Drink no fewer than eight glasses of fluid per day.

  5. Use a washcloth to remove peeling skin. Whenever you dry your skin, make sure that you use a soft washcloth to gently rub the surface so that it will not cause further cause damage. Use light pressure and circular motions to move the washcloth over your skin.

  6. Use honey to soothe itchiness. Applying a thin layer of honey on peeling skin not only helps remove it but also helps reduce the itchiness that can sometimes occur with sunburn. Simply leave the honey on the sunburnt area for about five to ten minutes, and then rinse it off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Some of your peeled skin will adhere to the honey and come off with it.

  7. Avoid pulling at dead skin. Your sunburnt skin will peel off when it is ready. You may cut hanging pieces of peeled skin with a pair of scissors, but avoid pulling tightly attached skin as this will only lead to more irritation. Likewise, avoid using abrasive materials on your skin such as loofas, sponges, or puffs since these can damage even healthy skin and cause unwanted skin infections.

One thing to remember in learning how to get rid of peeling skin after sunburn is that you should not rush through it, lest your skin becomes infected. Just follow the steps mentioned above to make sure that you get rid of your sunburn without damaging your skin in the process.
