How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps Fast

For those who shave frequently, razor bumps are an inconvenient consequence. They are unattractively reddish, itchy, and painful. It can be that the hair root or the pore is infected, resulting to inflammation and swelling of the pore. It can also be that the hair has grown under the skin’s surface. There are several ways of preventing razor bumps, but sometimes they fail. Here are ways on how to get rid of razor bumps fast so you can ease the discomfort.

  1. Apply heat

Place a hot compress or a small towel moistened with hot water to the razor bumps. Leave it on for five to 10 minutes. This will help shrink the razor bumps and open the pores for any treatment to be absorbed faster. In addition, the hot water helps prevent infection.

  2. Medicate

Hydrocortisone cream has been shown to be effective against razor bumps. Applying some of it to the bumps lessens the inflammation and redness. The itching will be gone as well, along with the evidence of the razor bumps.

Be warned that you can only use the cream for a maximum of three days. After that, the skin may develop rashes. Note that hydrocortisone may not be used in very sensitive areas.

Alternatives to hydrocortisone include products especially made for razor bumps that contain salicylic acid and witch hazel. Witch hazel is an herb that removes the feeling of itchiness from shaved areas. Salicylic acid is a popular anti-acne remedy because it kills bacteria, eliminates dead skin cells, and cleans pores of impurities. An affordable way to obtain salicylic acid is from aspirin. Crush an aspirin tablet with a clean heavy object and add drops of water to form a paste. Apply the paste on the razor bumps and let it dry. Rinse off the dried aspirin with warm water.

A pharmacist or dermatologist may suggest an antibiotic cream or Retin-A cream. The antibiotic kills the bacteria and the Retin-A helps prevent scarring.

If you prefer natural remedies, you can pat cornstarch onto the razor bumps, leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse or wipe if off. Alternatively, you can apply a milk and cucumber mask. Puree cucumber to fill half a cup and mix it into one-fourth cup of milk. Leave it in the refrigerator for several minutes to an hour. Apply it on the razor bumps and savor the feeling of relief. Leave the mask on for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing. You can also use tea tree oil and aloe vera gel on their own, as they are natural ingredients that soothe the skin.

  3. Wear organic

If the razor bumps are in an area where you wear clothing, make sure that you wear clothes made of cotton, linen, or other organic fabric that lets the skin breathe. Synthetic materials like polyester encourages sweating, traps the sweat and bacteria, and can make razor bumps worse.

While these tips on how to get rid of razor bumps fast are easy to follow, it is still best to prevent razor bumps before they happen. Letting your hair and skin heal for a day or two between shaving sessions is one of the best prevention methods. Make the surface slick and soft by applying shaving cream before shaving or wet it with warm water. Remember to use a clean razor with new blades and shave in the direction of hair growth.
