How to Get Rid of Razor Burn Underarms

You've just shaved your armpits and are enjoying the smooth, hairless sensation, but what can you do with the resulting redness and irritation? If you weren't able to take precautionary measures to avoid this uncomfortable aftermath, follow these steps on how to get rid of razor burn underarms:

  1. Apply a hydrocortisone cream right after shaving so that your armpits do not itch nor redden further. Only use it for a few days (not more than three to five) or your skin will get accustomed to it and won't respond as effectively.

  2. Apply aloe vera gel on the affected area to reduce irritation and itchiness.

  3. Don't shave your underarms for the next couple of days to stop irritating the skin further and give it time to heal. Moreover, stop applying any other product on your armpits, except treatment solutions, to ensure faster healing.

  4. Use tea bags to make the burn subside. Any kind of tea will do, as it generally has tannic acid, which helps heal skin rashes.



    Wet a tea bag in cold water, put it on the affected area, and leave it on for a couple of minutes. Tea tree oil can also have a similar effect.

  5. Don't have tea bags in the house right now? Put a couple of ice cubes in a thin washcloth or towel and place it on the inflamed area. Or you can simply soak a clean cloth in cold water, wring it out, and apply it on the irritated skin. Cold compresses help soothe the burn and relieve the itching and redness. Repeat as needed.

  6. Apple cider vinegar can reduce the inflammation as well. The acetic acid in the vinegar also helps prevent infection. Just dab it onto your armpits with a cotton swab. Air dry and then rinse with water. Repeat this process up to three times a day until the inflammation subsides. If your skin is sensitive, dilute the vinegar with water. You can test the solution on a small spot near your armpit first.

  7. A natural moisturizer, honey may help soothe razor burns and minimize swelling. Apply some directly on the inflamed area, and leave it for a couple of minutes. Wash it off with cold water afterwards. An alternative is mixing half a teaspoon of honey with a tablespoon of plain yogurt. Mix well and spread it on your armpits. Let it sit for 15 minutes before washing it off.

  8. Another option is using diaper rash cream, which can instantly make the rash subside and disappear.

  9. You can mix together baking soda, tea tree oil, and aloe vera gel. Spread this on the affected area to soothe the inflammation.

  10. When washing the area, use mild, fragrance-free soap formulated for sensitive skin. Pat, don't rub, the area dry.

  11. If you must use deodorants, wait at least a day before doing so and choose fragrance-free, solid ones that have conditioning or skin-soothing properties. Those made for sensitive skin is also recommended. Wait about 15 minutes after washing before applying the deodorant.

  12. In lieu of deodorants, talc-free baby powder can keep your underarms fresh and dry.

  13. Avoid wearing tight tops for the time being. Instead, wear loose-fitting blouses or shirts to let your armpit breathe and prevent irritating it further via chafing.
