How to Get Rid of Rosacea Naturally

According to the National Rosacea Society (NRS), about 16 million Americans have this chronic skin condition. However, only a small percentage of them are treated, one reason being that most of them don't even know they have it. That's because the signs and symptoms of rosacea are not life-threatening and may even appear as a simple rash or pimple breakout. Some may even consider it part of their “coloring.” This skin condition is chronic and may cause the affected person some physical, and even social, discomfort, depending on its severity. The good news is that it can be managed and controlled. If you prefer natural options, read through this guide on how to get rid of rosacea naturally:

  1. First, you need to reduce your exposure to factors that can trigger a flare-up. This means you should avoid stress, sun exposure, heat, alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, and hot drinks. If some of these are unavoidable, like going out in hot weather, minimize the effect by wearing a hat, using an umbrella, or stepping out during the cooler hours of the day.

  2. Not all people with rosacea have the same “triggers.” Observe the specific foods, situations, and products that can make yours flare up and avoid those culprits. Based on an NRS survey, the following were also found to have triggered irritation among rosacea-affected individuals: menthol, eucalyptus oil, witch hazel, and peppermint. As such, make sure the products you use don't contain any of these ingredients, including alcohol.

  3. During winter, protect your face with a ski mask or a scarf, as the cold wind is a rosacea trigger. Also, if you must drink hot beverages, wait until your drink is not steaming hot (but not cold either) before you drink it.

  4. Break the habit of touching your face unnecessarily, even when it's itchy. Instead, use a soft cloth or facial tissue to wipe your face. You can wash your face with just plain water or apply some aloe vera gel if it itches. Pat, do not rub, dry.

  5. If you use makeup, pick those that are non-comedogenic, alcohol-free, water-based, and fragrance-free. That's because, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, fragrances cause more allergic contact dermatitis than any other ingredient. If at all possible, you should test the product on a discreet area of your face before buying it. Also, use as little makeup as you can to avoid irritation.

  6. You can use creams that contain an herbal extract of the Chrysanthellum indicum plant. A study found that this may help treat rosacea as it reduced facial redness and other symptoms.

  7. Cucumber is also a viable natural option for controlling rosacea symptoms. You can blend fresh cucumber into a paste and smooth it onto your face. Keep it on for about 30 minutes and rinse with cool water. You can do the same thing with fresh apples.

  8. Rose hip oil is another recommended natural alternative by other individuals living with rosacea. This substance is known for its beneficial effects on the skin and has been used to treat scars, eczema, blisters, and even sunburn. Apply a couple of drops on the affected areas daily.

  9. Tai chi, hypnotherapy, or meditation may also help you manage rosacea symptoms, as these activities can help you keep your stress levels down. Avoid activities that induce sweating or raise your body temperature abruptly, as this will cause a flare-up. Go for relaxing and even-paced activities that you enjoy doing, like any of the three mentioned.

You must be committed to learning how to get rid of rosacea naturally in order for your efforts to be successful as managing symptoms is a lifelong responsibility.
