How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks after Pregnancy

Giving birth to a bouncing baby is painful, but a great joy. Afterwards, many women have to contend with stretch marks. These visible marks may be whitish in color (for those who are lucky) or purple-red (for those who are not so lucky) and accumulate over the nine months of pregnancy. During this time, the skin loses its elasticity because of the sudden weight gain. If you want to get your original skin back, here are some tips on how to get rid of stretch marks after pregnancy:

  1. Use alpha hydroxy acid or glycolic acid solution. This product is capable of eliminating fine lines and stretch marks. The glycolic acid will make the skin’s collagen more elastic. Apply the solution to the affected area once in the morning and one more time just before bedtime. If you have too many marks, apply it 3 times daily for the best results. This solution can be purchased over the counter and is safe to use even during pregnancy.

  2. Make use of cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is safe to use during and after pregnancy.

It is all-natural and effective in preventing and reducing the appearance of stretch marks on the belly. Continue the cocoa butter application a few times daily as part of your regular skin care regimen.

  3. Try unflavored olive oil. This is absolutely pure. Put a few drops of olive oil into your palm. Apply it to the affected area and massage gently. Use it 3 times a day to lessen the formation of visible marks.

  4. Use a Retinoic acid cream or Retin-A. According to the Mayo Clinic site, Retin-A helps to reconstruct skin collagen and to return the skin to its natural texture. It is best to apply this cream to the affected area after your postpartum check-up or when the stretch marks are still new. Tell your doctor that you are using it in case he has some precautions, especially if you are breastfeeding.

  5. Inquire from a dermatologist about laser surfacing. Laser surfacing will help remove the stretch marks for life, leaving you with no trace of them. Nevertheless, it is not for everybody. Get tested to see if your skin is tolerant to this kind of treatment.

  6. Try the powerful effect of a glycolic acid and Retin-A mixture. The stretch marks will lessen and eventually vanish after a series of dedicated applications. If you opt for this alternative, use the Retin-A before applying the glycolic acid. Note, however, that these solutions are prohibited during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to their possible effects on the child.

  7. Combine vitamin E oil with your favorite hand and body lotion. Constant use of Vitamin E oil will help lighten stretch marks, including those from previous pregnancies. Massage the mixture on the marks at least 2 or 3 times daily for substantial benefit.

  8. Take a vitamin C supplement daily. It is suggested by dermatologists that taking at least 500 mg of vitamin C supplement plus fresh fruits can help decrease the visibility of stretch marks.

Stretch marks are also hereditary. This means that some women will never experience them. If you often hear horror stories regarding stretch marks from your next of kin, you are likely to develop them. Protect yourself by following the above tips on how to get rid of stretch marks after pregnancy.
