How to Get Rid of Ticks on Dogs

Healthy dogs are happy dogs and they are a great addition to a dog-loving family. Training, pampering and caring for your dogs are some of the best ways to keep them healthy and happy. The love and care that you show your dogs will be returned to you by them.  One thing that you do not want to see on the skin of your dogs is ticks. These crawling creatures are parasites that attach themselves to your dog’s skin. Ticks suck and feed on your dog’s blood. They can cause your dog’s health to deteriorate as they carry bacteria which can cause infections and diseases. It is important for you to learn how to get rid of ticks on dogs and use these rules as soon as you spot a tick on your dog’s skin. Here are some instructions you can follow to successfully get rid of these parasites:

  1. Use a clean pair of tweezers or any other removal instrument. Examine your dog’s fur daily, feel the skin to see if here are any signs of tick infestation. At the first sign of ticks, immediately clean it and calm your dog. When the dog has rested, slowly approach him with tweezers in hand.

ber not to attempt to remove ticks with your bare hands as the disease may transfer unto your hands.

  2. Target the tick’s head. Brush your dog’s hair a little bit to relax it. Slowly brush through the area where the ticks have attached themselves. Pull the hair towards you and away from the skin. With the tweezers, grab the tick’s head and then slowly but firmly pull it out of your dog’s skin. As much as possible, do not allow any part of the tick to be left in the skin as it can still bring unwanted infections to your dog.

  3. Clean the area with disinfectant. After getting rid of the parasites, clean the affected area of the skin by dabbing antiseptic on it. This will kill the bacteria or infection that the ticks left on the skin. It will also prevent it from spreading.  Exert extra caution especially when the bite is on sensitive parts of the body such as the eyes.

  4. Place the ticks inside a plastic container. Kill the ticks by soaking them with alcohol and set it a safe place that is not reachable by children. You need to do this so that in case your pets become ill, you may need to take them to the veterinarian along with the plastic container to determine what caused the illness.

  5. Immediately consult your veterinarian. Watch for symptoms your dogs may manifest as a sign that it has already been bitten by ticks. Lyme and other related diseases may have already affected their health. At the first sign of these symptoms, do not waste time. Immediately take your pets to the vet. Have him checked out to learn the cause of the disease and how it can be cured.

Ticks are unavoidable; however, tick bites are curable as long as it is treated immediately and in the appropriate way. Learning how to get rid of ticks on dogs is a must-know for every individual or family that is taking care of dogs, regardless of breed.
