How to Get Wavy Hair

How to Get Wavy Hair

While last year was about sleek, straight hair, the latest celebrity-inspired look is all about loose, sexy waves. The style implies a tousled and carefree attitude, but in reality, achieving it can take quite a lot of work. Luckily for you, we came up with tips and tricks on how to get wavy hair without having to hire a professional stylist. Here√ā¬íre step-by-step guide on how to get gorgeous wavy hair:

  1. Wash your hair the day before. Day-old hair just seems to hold styles better. Be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to eliminate dryness and frizz.

  2. After washing, gently towel dry your hair to remove the excess water. Rub in a nickel-sized amount of hair serum and work it in until the entire length of the hair is covered. Apply the product about three inches away from the scalp downwards to avoid weighing the roots down.

  3. Flip your hair over and start blow-drying it on the cool setting. Flipping helps add more lift to your mane.

  4. When your hair is about 90% dry, stop blow-drying it and let it continue drying naturally.

  5. There are several methods that you can use to make your hair wavy. The one you choose primarily depends on how long your hair is, and how much wait time and prep time you have. You can let your waves develop overnight by setting your hair and then sleeping on it. Ideally, you can achieve this by (a) using rollers or curlformers; (b) tying your hair up in a sock bun; or (c) braiding your hair. The first method creates more defined waves, while the sock bun results in a very beachy look. As for braiding, you can actually vary the tightness of the waves according to the fatness of the braids. The thinner and tighter you make the braids, the more defined the waves will be.

  6. To create a sock bun, you will need a hair doughnut (either a pre-made one or one you have fashioned yourself). Tie your hair into a ponytail and then thread the doughnut into it. You will find it easier to manage your hair if you lightly spritz it with water first. Slip the doughnut down the ponytail so that you can wrap the last few inches of the hair around it. Flip the doughnut inside out so that the ponytail continues wrapping until you reach the base and the doughnut rests against your head. Sleep with the sock bun on, and when you take it down in the morning, you will have a head full of waves.

  7. If you need wavy hair in an instant, you can use a curling iron or a flat iron to create your waves. Alternatively, you can also try this trick: divide your hair into sections then braid it into twists. Tie off each individual twist then slowly run a hot flat iron down its length. Let it cool off to set the waves then take off the elastic ties to free the waves. Use hairspray liberally to make the waves last all day.

Above, we have shared several tips on how to get wavy hair. Try them out so that you can find the method that works best for your hair length and texture. Wavy hair can look good on all hair lengths. The key is styling it to frame your face. For long-lasting curls, you will want to use a setting product like a mousse or styling clay, but if your goal is just to add some texture to your hair, a shine serum and hairspray should be fine.
