Although the process is not always easy, due to the chances of drying out the meat, once you know how to grill chicken you can please your dinner guests. Many people avoid grilling chicken because they believe the results will be dry and flaky. However, these people do not realize that you can preserve the meat’s juicy and tasty qualities with careful cooking.

  1. When preparing the chicken, you must take precautions to avoid contamination. Always keep the meat refrigerated until you are ready to use it. When thawing, place it in a slightly warmer area. Always wash your hands and utensils prior to cooking.

  2. Marinate the chicken. Season your chicken with salt, pepper, crushed garlic and some lemon. Place it in a container or a zip lock bag and let it marinate inside the refrigerator for at least six hours. You may even want to let it sit overnight.


  3. When you are ready to grill, lightly brush or spray the grill with oil, especially if the chicken is skinless. If there is skin, you can skip this part; the skin already contains oils that will prevent the meat from sticking.

  4. The grill should be medium hot to avoid burning and overcooking the chicken. A medium heat is ideal for chicken, even if you cook it in a pan. Place the chicken in the grill. Resist the urge to turn the chicken repeatedly, which will result in a raw interior.

  5. Leave the chicken undisturbed on one side and cover the grill. This technique will ensure that your chicken is cooked evenly and give the appearance of an oven-cooked meal.

  6. Depending on the size of the chicken, you should always time the cooking process. A boneless chicken will cook faster than a chicken with bones. You should also consider the thickness of the chicken. The thicker the meat, the longer the cooking time. A boneless, thin chicken should cook for about five minutes per side. A boneless, thick chicken should cook for about eight minutes per side. Add two to three minutes if your chicken contains bones.

  7. To keep your chicken from looking burnt on the outside, avoid marinating it in any ingredients that contain burnable components. Instead, baste the meat with your preferred sauce near the end of the cooking process.

  8. Do not use a fork when cooking the meat. Poking it will release the juice and dry the chicken out. Use the proper utensils when cooking.

  9. When timer goes off, allow the chicken time to rest before carving it. You may see some juices flowing out of the meat and into the plate. If the juice is free from blood, the meat is ready. You may also want to use a meat thermometer or cut into the meat to check.

  10. Clean the area and utensils you used while cooking.
