How to Groom a Poodle

How to Groom a Poodle

Poodles can make a home livelier. This breed is appropriate for indoor environments. As far as appearances go, they are definitely beautiful. They are smart too and easy to handle and train. It is a big advantage for you to know how to groom a poodle, so you can do it yourself and save money. These are important pointers that you have to consider:

  1. Give your poodle a regular haircut using scissors. As their hair grows fast, a cut once every two months will be good.  You need not be an expert on this, but be careful not to hurt your poodle. You start by bathing it with warm water. Choose a shampoo that is suitable for its needs.  For example, if it has fleas, choose the one that is effective in killing fleas. If it has stains, use a stain remover in addition to the shampoo. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Dilute the shampoo and distribute it all over its body. Make sure to avoid the eyes. Lather the shampoo and massage thoroughly on its body, especially on the stained and dirty portions.

  2. Rinse off the shampoo and apply conditioner so the hair will not tangle when you brush it.

etangle the hair if necessary and rinse off the conditioner thoroughly. Dry the dog using a clean towel. Blow-dry it on low heat for quick results. Brush the flocks as you are blow drying the hair.

  3. Start with the trimming. Begin with its paws, behind its ears and then the face - keeping the hairs away from its eyes. Check the rest of its body hair. You can decide on the length and style that you like. Keep it still to avoid accidental cuts. Request an extra hand if necessary as not all poodles are well-behaved. You can make the finishing touches after you brush the newly cut hair thoroughly.

  4. Give a reward to your poodle for its cooperation afterwards. You can pet it or give it a treat. If it is tense, play with it to make it feel relaxed. Panting during a haircut can indicate stress. You can talk to it with a mild voice to make it somehow feel less tense.

  5. Part of good grooming is making sure your dog is physically fit. Have it checked by your veterinarian if you see anything unusual. Blemishes or rashes on its skin should be properly addressed. It could be some allergic reaction to the shampoo, conditioner or stain remover that you used. Minor skin irritations, if not treated properly, can lead to serious trouble later, which is unpleasant for your dog.

Caring for your poodle requires you to learn some skills. This is a chance for you to develop your creative talents.  Learning how to groom a poodle is interesting. Maybe you can develop a career out of it. When cared for properly, your pet poodle can keep you company for a very long time as they are noted to have longer lifespans than other breeds. So aside from proper grooming, good nutrition is also a must.
